Theairwaysresistancecanbemeasuredeasilyandquickly.ThesubjectestablishesarestingFRCleveloftidalbreathingandtheoperatorcanthenselecttocollectflowagainstboxdataforanalysis.Thetestcanbeperformedatbothrestingventilationandwiththepantingmethod.Thecorrelationbetweenmethodsisexcellent.Whentheoperatorissatisfiedwiththequalityofthecaptureddatatheocclusionvalvecanbeoperatedtosettheactualthoracicgasvolumeatwhichthemeasurementsaremade.ThisisessentialforameaningfulmeasurementofSgaw.Thesoftwarecontrolallowsmanualfittingoftheslopetothedata,selectionandde-selectionofeffortsforthemean,manualselectionofTidalvolumeandVitalcapacityminimumandmaximumpointsaswellasadjustmentoftheFRClevel.

ThetestcallsforthesubjecttoachieveastableFRClevel,theoperatorcanthenselectocclusionmode.Thepowerfulsoftwarethenclosesthevalveatanendtidalpointandtheresultingtangentofthemouthpressureversustheboxpressureisthethoracicgasvolume(TGV,FRC).AssubjectschangetheirFRClevelduringtheeffort,thesoftwaremonitorsthebaselineshiftandthenaddsorsubtractsthevolumedifferencefromthemeasuredthoracicgasvolumetoshowthe‘TrueFRC’astheTGV.Afullvitalcapacityeffortthenprovidesthecalculationsofthelungsub-divisionsrelatingtotheTGVmeasurement.Completecontroloverreportedparametersandinformation.Selectionofdata,movementofthetidalvolume,vitalcapacityandFRClevelsaswellasdeletionofpoorefforts.Fivesetsofmeasurementscanberecordedatthesameordifferenttimestoidentifyimprovementsinpatientmeasurements.Threedifferentocclusionmodescanbeselected:1.Insp.cycle-2.Completecycle-3.Multiplecycles

Usingfastgasanalysis,thismethodcollectstheexhaledbreathdirectlyasahighresolutiondataarray.Thishastheadvantagethatposttestanalysiscanbeperformedaligningthestartofsampleontothealveolarplateauaftertheclearancesofallthedeadspaces.Asampleaslowas50mlcanbeusedtocalculatethediffusion.Thiscanovercomethevolumelimitationofothersystemsandmethods.
