Tickle the Ivories like Handel?

Perform at a young age like Mozart?

Combine styles of music like Linkin Park?

It all starts with understanding the basics of writing music.

But First…..

We must understand note values and rest values!

Note ValuesAccording to AllWords.Com

A Note Value is:

A musical notation that indicates the relative duration of a note, using the color or shape of the note head, the presence or absence of a stem, and the presence

of flags.

Let’s take a look at each of these notes individually!

A Whole Note is shown above as a hollow circle representing a four beat hold in music.

When playing a whole note, we would play on beat one and hold for four beats. Let’s try that now on our

recorders.

When playing a half note, we would play on beat one and hold for two beats.

Let’s try that now on our recorders.

A Quarter Note is shown above as a colored in circle with a stem attached. This note represents a one beat hold in music.

When playing a quarter note, we would play on beat one and hold for one beat. Let’s

try that now on our recorders.

An Eighth Note is shown above as a colored in circle with a stem and flag attached. This note represents a 1/2 beat hold in music.

When playing an eighth note, we would play on beat one and hold for 1/2 beat. Let’s

try that now on our recorders.
