Marissa Shue (‘15) Max Mara in Beverly Hills /South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa
SUMMER
At the Beverly Hills store I did styling for clients
around the area as well as clients around the world. I
attended morning meetings, discussing new merchan-
dise that came in, the goals that should be met at the
end of the week, and how Max Mara is doing out of
all other Max Mara stores around the world. I learned
mostly the business side of Max Mara in Beverly Hills.
In Costa Mesa, I was an assistant to a senior
visual merchandiser. Every two weeks I shifted mer-
chandise around the store to create new looks for
consumers. I also changed mannequins in-store as
well as window displays. There are three large windows
which had to be changed and tweaked according to
the head of the visual team in the NYC
corporate office. Being a visual store, you are allowed
to “tweak” looks based on the store location and
consumer.
I also learned stylist-customer relationships
and how important it is to keep connections with your
clients so that they may come back to you to shop.
When selling something to a customer, the trick is to
not “sell.” Instead, you create memories with a custom-
er and share your opinion on what looks flattering on
them versus what does not.
I will apply everything that I have learned from
my internship for the future by putting myself out there
and to not be afraid of what the fashion world has to
offer and challenge me with. 3.
Rag & Bone was truly a great company to have
the opportunity to intern for. I had the position of
trim buying intern. Unlike the non-glamorous stereo-
type of internships, I was not treated as an errand
girl or coffee runner. Instead, I had to take on re-
sponsibilities of the associate trim buyer, Lauren, whom
I worked under. This internship gave me a lot of real
world experience to what buyers actually do.
Most importantly however, working for a small-
er company like Rag & Bone gave me the opportunity
to work alongside all different departments. For ex-
ample, the design department would come to the trim
department daily to express what they wanted to find
or what inspiration they had for upcoming seasons.
Living in New York City for a summer was a
great experience and I highly recommend students
do a summer internship there. I lived in the FIT
upperclassman housing, and roomed with another
Mercyhurst fashion student. I worked and lived right
in Manhattan. There was always great stuff to do on
the weekends, and an overall great life experience.
I do want to note how I came about this in-
ternship. I had the help of a Mercyhurst alumni, Anna,
who works with Rag & Bone often. I think networking
is a valuable skill that students should develop and
utilize. From this internship I think I now have a good
direction on what I would like to do upon graduation. I
enjoyed working alongside the fabric buying depart-
ment, and therefore, I would like to pursue a career in
trim and/or fabric buying.

Parisan Dreams Every two years, the fashion merchan-dising program plans a trip oversees. This year’s trip was to the iconic country of France where students not only got to tour around the magical city of Paris but experience exclusive visits to fashion hotspots.

I never imagined I would get the opportunity
to go until this past year. Last May about 30
students from the fashion department along
with faculty went on a 7-day trip of a lifetime
to Paris! The trip was filled with fashion appoint-
ments, tourist attractions, museum visits and of
course, lots of shopping!
This trip was my first time out of the
country. I was feeling nervous, excited and I just
wasn’t sure what to expect. While we were
driving around the streets of Paris on our way
to the hotel, I couldn’t help but notice what all
the Parisians were wearing. Trust me, it is no
lie when people say Parisians dress better than
Americans. Throughout the entire trip, I saw
maybe two people wearing sweat pants. I noticed
that Parisians have a classic style and wear lots
and lots of black. Parisians take simple outfits
and dress them up with accessories such as
scarves, hats and shoes.

One of the first things we did the first day
was a walking tour of Paris and a visit to Notre
Dame. After walking around the city and seeing
how different Paris was from the U.S, I knew I was
ready to be immersed into the Parisian culture.
What better way to experience the
culture than eating duck, a meal that is a delicacy
to the French. On our first night in Paris, we had
a group dinner at a restaurant in the 3rd district
of Paris. When I found out everyone was being
served duck, I was skeptical of this at first, but I
figured I would give it a try! The duck was differ-
ent than your everyday chicken and turkey, but it
was neat to try a meal that is so hugely popular
in France.
The remainder of the week flew by! It
included various fashion activities such as meeting
with a fashion designer who helps prepare the
animal fur that is used by designers like Christian
Dior and Chanel. We visited a fashion museum,
which showcased many designer clothes and we
shopped around Galeries Lafayette and Prin-
temps, the most well known department stores in
Paris!
Between the shopping, culture and deli-
cious croissants, I fell in love with Paris that week! I
would definitely go back to Paris in a heartbeat!

THIS fall the Fashion Promotion class is doing something a little different
than years past. As many of you will recall, promotion usually plans, promotes and
executes a fashion show at the end of the school year. But, this year, the class has
some new and different plans for their fashion show.
On November 7th, the promotion class will host a virtual fashion
show titled Heat up the Holidays at the STUDEnt union. What is a virtual
fashion show you may ask? It is going to be a production, on a large screen in the
common area of the mall. The screen will be projected with photographs of models
showing off the greatest holiday trends for girls, guys and children from the most
fashion forward stores in the mall. The class will preselect, style and photograph
the looks and showcase them on the screen complete with music and eMCees for your
viewing pleasure!
Aeropostle, Buckle, Macy’s and Charlotte Russe are just a few of the great
stores that are teaming up with the Promotion class to pull off this awesome virtual
fashion idea.
Keep an eye out for more info as the fashion show approaches. All are wel-
come and bring your friends! The promotion class is already hard at work planning
this state-of-the-art show. Hope to see you there!

Alumni Feature
Why did you choose to attend Mercyhurst? I knew I wanted to attend Mercyhurst because of the unique
opportunity to attend and obtain a degree from FIT. Going to NYC
immediately after high school sounded a little intimidating so this
program was very appealing to me. Now, having one of the best
Fashion Merchandising colleges on my resume as well as a B.S. from
a respected university definitely sets me apart and has helped me
get many interviews in the recent years since graduation.
What are your daily activities and job responsibilities?I measure, fit and approve final garment construction and spec-
ifications including color, fit and trim. I also manage all vendor to
buyer communication regarding apparel specifications.
How do you feel Mercyhurst prepared you for your current job? The classes at Mercyhurst greatly prepared me for my current position. I draw most on my education in my
technical position when hearing industry terms, such as fabrics, construction details, and silhouettes. “Tricot,” “Pan-
tone” and “twill” are all words that I had never heard before my Mercyhurst classes, but are now part of my daily
vocabulary.

Transitioning Y ou may need to do a double take while
scrolling through your Pinterest Home Page on the
hunt for the upcoming hottest fall trends. And why
may that be exactly? Well for starters, pastels made
the list. Yes, that is right, fashionistas, what used to
be a crowd-pleasing color palette reserved for the
Spring, is now creeping its way into the Fall as well.
Fall is known for warm plums, bright or-
anges, brown-toned neutrals and Kelly greens. So
how on earth did pastels wind up in this crowd?
Retailer H&M recently launched its new Divided
brand line in mid-August kicking off its fall back to
school styles with many light, rose pinks and soft,
mint greens—two colors that will be big in the fall.
So far this year pastels really have not let up since the
spring.
Next trend up on the fall forecast list takes us
back in time just a few years shy of the current style
inspiration era to the early 60s. According to Elle,
designers Miu Miu, Valentino, and Gucci all show-
cased their swingin’ sixties styles for their Fall 2014
lines.
This fall will present a few varieties of coats
and jackets one of which being the fur parka. Prada,
Emilio Pucci,Oscar de la Renta and many other de-
signers all showed off their fluffy embellished coats
on the runway that foretells fur’s possible comeback.
Following a similar pattern of the leaves changing,
trends too will range across a wide spectrum creat-
ing an interestingly trend transforming season.

Who is Savannah Adair?
From small town Dubois, Pennsylvania
she is a former Mercyhurst cheerlead-
er, a junior fashion merchandising
major, and a free spirit. The first time I
ever met her, I couldn’t help but no-
tice her long, lusturous, blonde hair,
friendly smile, and classic style.
Like a true fashion guru, her
shopping problem started at a
young age. “It was really bad”, she
expresses with embarrassment. Her
addiction started with purses a fam-
ily friend used to buy her. She fell in
love with each and every one. From
then on fashion was her venom and
it continues to influence her life cre-
atively. Her goal in life is to be one
who excutes and plans events from
family parties to glamourous fashion
shows.

RP: You planned a fashion show last
year for the fashion club, right?
SA: Oh yeah! It was called “Neon Nights”
inspired by Demi Lovato’s music video of
“Neon Lights”. I had an idea & thought
that a fashion show with that theme would
be perfect. Once I have an inspiration it
sparks so many ideas & I get so excited for
it to come all together. Because of this, I
usually take on a leadership role.
RP: So what do you ultimately want to
do with this talent?
SA: I’m still trying to figure it out. I would
love to coordinate fashion shows but I am
also interested in childrens’ wear. My cous-
in, Kylah, is my inspiration, she’s like my little
sister. I love working with childern & fashion.
So with fashion guiding me, I know I will end
up doing something I love.
Rosaly Pagan: So why are you so inter-
ested in event planning?
Savannah Adair: My family is a big part
of the reason. They have always been so
involved in event planning. My grandpar-
ents cater & so the whole family helps out.
We get requests to do a variety of parties.
RP: Was there someone specfically in
your family who was a leader and ulti-
mately influenced you?
SA: Defintely my mom. She is extremely
organized & always on top of things. We
have alot of the same interests & often
think alike. It ’s crazy because I can be
thinking something & she says it out loud.
RP: Is there anyone in the fashion indus-
try that increased your interest?
SA: I know this is going to sound so typical
but I loved watching Lauren Conrad on
The Hills. I envied her job at Teen Vogue
and loved everything her job involved;
planning fashion events and helping with
fashion shows. I was like, “There’s jobs like
this?” From that moment, I knew that I want-
ed to do that. Fashion is my motivation.

Sarah Paulson - Armani PrivéPossibly too into character, Sarah Possibly too into character, Sarah Paulson’s dress could be classified as that of a horror story. Upcoming NYC TRIP:
“The opportunities and connections at FIT, and in NYC,
are amazing! Inside and outside of the classroom, we
have been making the most of our time here- attending
New York Fashion Week and the Fashion Rocks concert
were major highlights for some of us.”- Sara Chuzie ‘15
“Its a very hard transition but there are many perks. The teachers
here are very qualified and have great backgrounds. Classes
are only one day a week so I got them all on two days which
makes it easier if you want to intern or work here. I would encour-
age rising Juniors to apply.” - Jessica Stewart ‘15
“When I woke up on my last ‘first’ day of school as a college senior I was
very overwhelmed when I stepped outside and realized that I was not in Erie
anymore...the atmosphere at FIT definitely gives you a fashion feel. In terms of
class it is very repetitive information but my professors all have such unique
experiences in the fashion world that they are able to relate the information
to their lives and all of a sudden it is fresh and new and not straight out of the
textbook.”-Annalee Burkley ‘15
The dates for the trip are tentatively set for May 19-22, 2015 (a Tuesday through Friday).
We will be flying out and into the Buffalo, NY airport. The cost of the trip will include round trip
airfare, all ground transportation while in NYC, hotel accommodations, daily continental breakfast, and
a Broadway show;which totals around $700 per student. We visit the Fashion Institute of Technol-
ogy and the famous Mood Fabrics store highlighted in the hit reality television series, Project Runway.
Please contact Amy for more information on deposit and transportation if interested!
