Fan Road Trip:

A WEEKEND IN CARDINAL-TOWNBy Bryan Wallman

oad trips are a rite of passage in college. Sowhen I first looked at the Rockies schedule

and saw they were playing in St. Louis the weekendafter finals, it made sense to me to pack my bags andbuy tickets to Busch Stadium for a weekend double-header.

I made the long trek from northwest Iowa withAlex Wolters, my baseball teammate from Dordt Col-lege. He is a hard-core Cardinals fan, so we figured itwould be a friendly rivalry to finish off my freshmanyear. The ten-hour drive down I-29 and across I-70was exciting and even involved a surprise rest stop atKauffman Stadium to watch the Royals host the Yan-kees.

Growing up, I loved baseball and grew to love myColorado Rockies. I remember staying up late, wellpast my bedtime in 2007, to watch Matt Hollidaysafely slide into home in game 163. I was there whenJonathan Papelbon and the Red Sox clinched aWorld Series win at Coors Field, and I was therewhen Tulo turned an unassisted triple play in that

same year. But one thing that I had never seen wasthe Rockies play and win away from Colorado.

My first game in St. Louis—game two of the se-ries—was a struggle for the Rockies. Adam Wain-wright continued his dominating spring for theCardinals with a two-hit, complete-game shutoutagainst the Rockies. At one point during the game,Cardinal pitchers had combined to retire 40 straightbatters, tying a Major League record.

It was not the most enjoyable time to be a Rock-ies fan. But at last, Nolan Arenado singled on a linedrive up the middle to end the streak. Unfortunately,the Rockies couldn’t mount much more of an offensethan that and ended up dropping the game, 3-0.

The final game of the series was much better fora Rockies fan. The Rox jumped out to a three-runlead in the third inning, thanks to a Troy Tulowitzkifour-bagger to deep left. Jorge De La Rosa pitchedseven innings of two-hit baseball and when it was allsaid and done, the Colorado Rockies avoided thesweep, winning 8-2.
