THE CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF VICTORY VICTORIA, TEXAS APRIL 10, 2016

WE WELCOME THE NEWLY BAPTIZED

Marco Navarro

A Message From Our Pastor Happening in the Parish During Lent

As our Easter Season continues to unfold, we hear proclaimed today, in the Gospel of Saint John, of another encounter the apostles had with Je-sus. Initially, they did not know it was Jesus, but later, through the ac-tions of Christ, they came to recog-nize him. It is in this passage, from the twenty-first Chapter of the Gos-pel, that we hear Jesus ask Peter, three times, “Do you love me?” Jesus did not need the assur-ance of Peter's love. It was the Lord reassuring Peter of his gift of for-

giveness and mercy. Three times Peter denied Jesus. Three times Jesus offered him peace and asked him to tend and feed his sheep. In the end, Jesus said to Peter, just as he says to us, “Follow me.” May you have a most blessed week with the Lord.

May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

The 2016 Diocesan Services Appeal (DSA)

Began March 1 The 2016 DSA campaign began on March 1, 2016. The goal as-signed to the Parish of Our Lady of Victory Cathedral is $126,839.00. The DSA funds the operation of the Diocese of Victoria. This in-cludes the Bishop's Office, the Catholic Lighthouse, Financial Ad-ministration, Pastoral Institute, Permanent Diaconate, Religious Edu-cation, Retired and Infirm Priests, Safe Environment Office, the edu-cation and formation of future priests for our Diocese, the Spiritual Renewal Center, the Tribunal, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, and a host of other services. If every individual/family in the parish made a donation to the 2016 DSA Campaign, we could reach our goal! If we reach our required goal, we will not have to use parish funds for this Diocesan Campaign, as we have done in past years. Let us support Bishop Cahill, the Diocese and, therefore, our parish. We all have an obligation to support not only our local parish, but also our Diocese. Please assist us in reaching our assigned goal! Again, thank you for your generosity.

As of April 6, 2016, the following is our DSA Update:

Amount Received: $16,860.00

Number of Individuals/Families Participating: 75 out of 2,700

Family Connection Today’s Gospel describes what we can easily imag-ine as a picnic on the beach. Just as Jesus' miracle at the wedding feast at Cana blesses the love between man and woman celebrated in the sacrament of mar-riage, Jesus' attentiveness to food and mealtimes rais-

es the possibility that our meal gatherings can be sacred times. In families, the domestic church, our meals together are everyday op-portunities to gather and recall Jesus' presence with us. As in the Eucharist, we bring the gifts that God has given us, which have been prepared especially for our Mass, and at our family meals we share gifts that God has given to us and that we have worked together to prepare. This includes the food on the table and also the people who gather around the table. We ask God to bless these gifts and to be present among us in all of our interactions.

Consider a recent family meal: What food was served? Where did the food come from? Who prepared the food? Who served the food? Was mealtime a happy time? Why or why not? Observe that today's Gospel tells about a meal that Jesus shared with his disciples after his Resurrection. Read aloud today’s Gospel, John 21:1-14. Reflect on the Gospel reading using the questions above. Talk about ways in which this meal that Jesus shared with his disciples might remind us of the meal we share at the Eucharist. You might choose to plan a special meal together as a family, encouraging each person to participate in the meal preparation. Pray together that Jesus will make his loving presence known in your family life. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.

TIP TO HELP YOUR PRAYER LIFE

Accountability Counts – You need someone who is more objective than you are to look at your pray-er life and see how you are doing and how the Holy Spirit is working. If you haven’t been praying daily for at least a year, then you probably aren’t ready for spiritual direction. But, even if you aren’t ready for spiritual direction, having a good friend who prays regularly to talk to can be good.

Baptism Class For Parents and Sponsors The class will be Tuesday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the Religious Education Building. Parents must be registered parishioners of Our Lady of Victory and bring the child’s birth certificate. Class is for adults only. Attendance at baptism class is required for parents and godparents.

Godparents are to be: 1) fully initiated into the Catholic Church; baptized, received 1st

Communion and Confirmation; 2) be at least 16-years-old; 3) practicing the faith (attends Mass faithfully); 4) married - must be in accordance with the Catholic Church or

living a chaste single lifestyle. For more information, call 575-4741 or 575-8132.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Take time to stop by the book rack in the Ca-thedral to find a large assortment of prayer books for children and adults.

The Pope Speaks “Christian hope is a gift that God gives us if we come out of ourselves and open our hearts to him. This hope does not disappoint us because the Holy Spirit has been poured into our hearts (cf. Rom 5:5). The Paraclete does not make everything look appealing. He does not remove evil with a magic wand. But he pours into us the vitality of life,

which is not the absence of problems, but the certainty of being loved and always forgiven by Christ, who for us has conquered sin, death and fear. Today is the celebration of our hope, the cele-bration of this truth: nothing and no one will ever be able to sepa-rate us from his love (cf. Rom 8:39).”

“The great gift of Easter is hope: Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake.”

- English Benedictine monk Basil Hume

MEN’S SUPPORT GROUP FOR SEXUAL ADDICTIONS The incidence of sexual addiction is increasing at an alarming rate across the nation. Men are disconnecting from reality to purse the illusion of love, acceptance and affirmation they find through por-nography (in all of its forms), fantasy, anonymous encounters, and affairs. To help men overcome this addiction, the Emmaus Counsel-ing Center is offering a structured group experience called WALK-ING FREE. The goals of WALKING FREE include eradicating life-dominating sin patterns, establishing guiding foundations of truth, and encouraging life-changing relationships of love and trust in the lives of group members. The group meets once a week and utilizes both large and small group settings for ministry. Meetings are confi-dential; meeting times and locations are not publicized. For more information, please call the Emmaus Center at 212-0830.

The Emmaus Center is open Monday thru Friday to provide Catholic-based professional counseling and spiritual direction for the faithful of the Diocese of Victoria and others seeking such services. The Emmaus Center assists clients in discovering that it is Christ who walks with them on their journey of life, especially during the tumultuous and painful experiences of human existence. To make an appointment call 212-0830 or go to www.emmauscounselingcenter.com .
