Field Trip to Gowanus Canal ConservancyYoung Scholars’ Academy

On April 9, 2014, 3rd and 4th grade students from Young Scholars’ Academy travelled to the Gowanus Canal Conservancy in Brooklyn to learn about pollution problems in the canal and to volunteer to help solve those problems! After learning about Riparian Planting in New Zealand from their Global Guide, Samantha, the students were well versed in water pollution solutions and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy volunteers were very impressed with their knowledge!

Our Global Guide, Samantha, volunteered to come along on the field trip with us!

Upon arriving at the Conservancy, we met Christine, who taught us all about the pollution problems and solutions at the canal.

After learning about Riparian Planting from Samantha, the students knew that planting trees and plants along waterways helps to keep the water clean.

Next up, students got to work with the volunteers, helping to sift compost, arrange plants and trees, and mulch.

I can make a difference in this world! I can! I will! I must!
