Program:TheUniversityofNevada,Renooffersatwo-yearprogramleadingtotheM.S.degreeinSpeechPathology.Studentsarepreparedforprofessionalcareersasspeech-languagepathologistsinschools,hospitals,rehabilitationcenters,andcommunityclinics.TheprogramprovidestheacademicandclinicalrequirementsnecessaryfortheCertificateofClinicalcompetencefromASHA.StudentsbecomeeligibleforASHAcertificationfollowingcompletionoftheM.S.degree,successfulcompletionofthenationalcertificationexamination(NationalPraxisExamination),andcompletionofaone-yearclinicalfellowshipyear(CFY).TheCFYconsistsofninemonthsoffull-timeprofessionalemploymentasaspeech-languagepathologistcompletedunderthesupervisionofacertifiedspeech-languagepathologist.

Studentsworkwiththeiradvisorstodevelopanapprovedprogramofstudy.TheM.S.curriculumprovidesavarietyofcourseofferingsthatemphasizeevaluationandtreatmentofcommunicativedisordersinvolvinglanguage,phonology,fluency,voice,alaryngealspeech,aphasia,cleftpalate,augmentativecommunicationandswallowing.Althoughindividualityisconsideredindesigningaprogramofstudy,studentswillfollowaprescribedprograminordertoadequatelyprepareforprofessionalcareers.Studentshavetwooptionsforcompletionoftheprogram:ThesisandNon-ThesisOption.

Non-ThesisOption:Thenon-thesisoptionrequiresaminimumof45semestercreditsatthegraduatelevelincludingawrittencomprehensiveexaminationcredit(SPA795).Thenon-thesisoptionrequirescomprehensivewrittenexaminationscoveringcommunicationscience,normalspeech,language,andhearingprocesses,pathologies,andclinicalprocedures.

ComprehensiveExaminations:

Comprehensiveexaminationsareadministeredaboutthefirstweekofthespringsemesterinthesecondyearofthegraduateprogram.

ExaminationquestionsaregeneratedbyacademicfacultyandarerandomlyassignedtostudentsbytheDirectorofGraduateStudies.Thestudentswriteresponsesfortwoseparatefacultyintwo,two-hourblocks.Theexaminationsareproctoredbymembersofthefaculty.

Studentswillbenotifiedoftheresultsofthecomprehensiveexaminationsnomorethantwoweeksfollowingtheexams.Ifastudentachievesa‘lowpass’,additionaldiscussionorwritingmayberequiredtoachieveasuccessful‘pass’atthediscretionofthefacultywhowrotethequestion.Ifastudentdoesnotpassacomprehensiveexaminationquestion,thestudentisrequiredtocompleteanadditionalexaminationquestion.Ifthestudentdoesnotpasstheadditionalcomprehensiveexaminationquestion,theywillbedismissedfromtheprogram.

ThesisOption:Thethesisoptionrequiresaminimumof50semestercredithoursthatincludesaminimumof6-creditsforthesis(SPA797).Thesiscreditsarelistedaselectives.Thestudentwillcompleteathesiswithafacultymemberwhowillprovideguidanceandmentorshiptocompletetheirprogram.

Studentsmustcompletearesearchproject,writeathesis,andpassacomprehensiveoralexaminationcoveringthethesisandbackgroundmaterial.

KnowledgeandSkillsAcquisition(KASA):Programsmayusethemechanismsoftheirchoicetodocumentandtrackstudentprogressintheacquisitionofknowledgeandskills.TheCouncilonAcademicAccreditationinAudiologyandSpeech-LanguagePathology(CAA)willreviewanaccreditedprogram'sprocessandformstoensurecompliancewithitsstandardrelatedtoaccuraterecordkeeping.TheCouncilforClinicalCertificationinAudiologyandSpeech-LanguagePathology(CFCC)requiresanapplicanttofileacertificationapplicationthatcontainsthe"VerificationbyProgramDirector"pagetoverifythatthestudenthasmettheappropriateknowledgeandskillsmandatedbythestandards.(www.asha.org,2016)TheDepartmentofSpeechPathologyandAudiologyusestheKnowledgeandSkillsAcquisition(KASA)formtoconfirmthestudents’acquisitionofallrequiredareasofknowledgeandskillrequiredbyCAA.Students’knowledgeandskillsoutcomesinthefollowingareasaremonitoredusingtheseformsinconjunctionwithacademicandclinicalperformancemeasures:

FormsandDeadlinesforGraduateStanding:

TheGraduateSchoolrequiresthateachgraduatestudenthaveanAdvisory-ExaminingCommitteeconsistingofthreemembers.Twomembersarefromthedepartmentwithonememberbeingthechairofthecommittee.ThethirdmemberofthecommitteeisaGraduateSchoolRepresentative,whoisagraduatefacultymemberholdinganacademicappointmentinadepartmentorprogramdifferentfromthatofthechairofthecommittee.

TheDirectorofGraduateStudiesintheDepartmentofSpeechPathologywillassigneachstudentallofthemembersoftheAdvisory-ExaminingCommittee.ThisistohelpensurethatallpaperworkissubmittedtotheGraduateSchoolinatimelymanner.Inthefirstsemesteroftheprogram,youwillberequiredtofillouttheProgramofStudyformwithallnamesandtheNoticeofCompletionwithallnames.Oncetheseformsarecomplete,theDirectorofGraduateStudieswillensureformsaresignedbyallpartiesandsubmittedtotheGraduateSchool.TheProgramofStudyisduetotheGraduateSchoolinthemiddleofthesecondsemester.TheNoticeofCompletionwillremaininthedepartmentandwillbesubmittedinthefinalsemesterofyourprogram.YouwillbeprovidedwithspecificinstructionstofillouttheformscorrectlyandyouwillworktheDirectorofGraduateStudiestocompletetheforms.

Each graduate has an Academic Advisor. An academic advisor is a faculty member who will follow you during your graduate program to ensure that you are going through this process successfully. Your advisor is the liaison between you and the faculty at large.
