FINDING THE EPICENTER OF AN EARTHQUAKE

Focus vs. Epicenter

Svaha (The other 5 second rule)

A general rule of thumb: For every 5 seconds of time between the lightning and the thunder the storm is about 1 mile away.

For example if you see the lightning and count to 10 and then hear the thunder the storm is about 2 miles away. (10 seconds ÷ 5 = 2 miles)

The P-Waves would be like the lightning because the P-Waves are faster and the S-Waves are like the thunder because the S-Waves are slower.

The longer the time interval between the P-Waves and the S-Waves the further away the epicenter.
