The Simon Konover Recognition for
Excellence in Holocaust Teaching
This recognition in honor of Simon Konover, z”l, is given to
dedicated educators who passionately teach the lessons of the
Shoah. Simon was born in the small shtetl of Makow Mazowieki
in Poland. He survived the unthinkable during the Holocaust and
has since lived his life “minute to minute, not hour to hour”.
Simon’s lifelong passion and generosity has been instrumental in
our community. The Konover legacy is felt throughout, from his work with Paul
Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for seriously ill children in Ashford,
Connecticut and an affiliated camp in Israel, campus housing and the Konover Campus
Center at the University of Hartford, the Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary
Jewish Life at the University of Connecticut, the University Libraries, the Thomas J.
Dodd Center, the Kosher Dining Center and UCONN Health Center, the Hebrew High
School of New England, Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Hartford and
Hebrew University in Israel. Simon, a founder of the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum in Washington, D.C., served as President and Campaign Chairman for the
Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford, where he was also honored as a Life Director.
JFACT Fund was honored to recognize Simon in 2008 with the Community Builder
Award.
Voices of Hope
Voices of Hope was created by descendants of Holocaust survivors
to collect, categorize and share the experiences of Holocaust
survivors for the benefit of future generations. Our bold mission
is to foster a culture of courage and social action against hate,
bigotry, intolerance and indifference.
Jewish Federation Association of Connecticut
(JFACT)
JFACT serves as a legislative representative for the seven
Connecticut Jewish Federations and their associated agencies, an
associate for the Jewish Community, a public affairs spokesperson
and coordinator on statewide programs on issues of mutual
interest and concern in the state of Connecticut and Israel.
