♫ MUSIC NOTES ♫ Ellena tours Europe!!
During the school holidays, Ellena Hicks toured Europe as part of the West of the
Divide choir. She performed in amazing concert halls, saw amazing cathedrals
and engaged in workshops led by amazing conductors and composers.
Ellena reflects on this experience below.
“The West of the Divide tour consisted of 178 people in total. There were 88
students from the Central West region. We went to places like Salzburg, which is
the birthplace of Mozart. Whilst there, we attended a workshop with the
capellmeister (music leader) at the Salzburg Cathedral. It is a beautiful
cathedral that featured five pipe organs, all of which Mozart had played. We then gave a performance
in this amazing venue with the capellmeister playing an impromptu introduction on Mozart’s organ.
In Vienna we performed in a church where there was a six second delay between sound made at the
front of the church and the sound reaching the back of the church. This made for interesting lessons in
timing and acoustics.
We also had the chance to enjoy many other cultural highlights during our time away. We saw many
castles and palaces and had a tour of every major city that we visited. We enjoyed local food and culture
through various dinners and lunches at iconic places. Importantly we discovered to always have change
on hand, as the public bathrooms often needed to be paid for to use – but they were clean!
We attended a Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna, went on a Jazz boat cruise in Prague and my
favourite show was when we saw the Prague National Theatre’s production of Verdi’s opera ‘La Traviata.’
The concert hall was massive and ornate and beautiful and there were subtitles to help us interpret this
famous opera.
This was a fantastic and memorable school
excursion!”

From the
Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of our School Community
It has been a busy start to Term 4, and as we all know things will only continue to get busier as
the end of the year approaches. I am pleased to have returned from leave and am looking
forward to the challenges of relieving as Principal for Term 4. My thanks go to Ms Jude Bertolin
and Mr Stuart Riles for the job they each did as Relieving Principal, and Ms Kirsten Hutchinson
and Mr Matt Scott for relieving at different stages as Deputy Principal.
Minister for Education’s Visit
It was with great pleasure that we welcomed the Minister for Education, Mr Adrian Piccoli, MP
to the school on Monday this week. He was able to visit the Year 7/8 AcTal class in the STEM
Centre to look at the coding work they have been completing, the CHPA students who were
involved in a training circuit, the school canteen and a Year 9 English class. He was very
impressed with all of the students and teachers who he met.
HSC Exams and Grad
The HSC exams have started successfully for our Year 12 students with a week already
completed. These exams will continue for another three weeks, finishing on the 4th November.
The completion of 13 years of schooling will then be celebrated on the 18th November with the
Year 12 Graduation at the Orange Function Centre. Year 12 students and their families are
reminded that tickets are available from the Front Office and cost $60 each.
2017 HSC Commencement
Year 11 students have now commenced the HSC course in all their subjects. Assessment books
for Year 12 were reissued this week after a number of errors were found in the initial copy. I
apologise for this and remind students and families that the correct book has a purple cover.
This book contains all the information related to assessment tasks for the next 12 months. All
Year 11 students have also been given the opportunity to take part in the 10% On Top
program, where they nominate a staff member to mentor and support them through the HSC.
I encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity. The Senior Study Sessions also
begin this Thursday in the STEM Centre from 3:30-5:00pm, giving students a space to study and
complete assessment tasks with teacher assistance.
2017 School Captains
It is with great pleasure that I announce the new
captains for 2017: Georgia Kiel and Mackenzie Reith-
Snare - Captains, Alicia Ilievski and Matthew Gray -
Vice Captains. The executive staff and I look forward
to working with them in the coming year.
Congratulations.

50th Anniversary
In 2017 our school turns 50 and planning is well under way for a range of celebrations,
culminating in a ‘Back to Canobolas’ celebration weekend on the 20th-21st May 2017, including
a dinner at the Orange Function Centre. We are currently trying to make contact with any past
staff members, as well as collect any memorabilia (including old uniforms and photographs)
that people may be willing to donate or lend us. If you are able to help please contact me
either at the school or via email (Katherine.wootten@det.nsw.edu.au).
I hope you have a wonderful fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you in Week 4.
With my warmest regards

ROTARY DINNER Once again the school’s Hospitality, Food and Beverage staff and students did a fabulous job
hosting the Rotary Club of Orange school dinner. The guests were very impressed with the quality
of the meals and the overall level of professionalism demonstrated by the school’s waiting and
beverage staff.
Congratulations to School Captain, Georgia Kiel and Vice Captain Alicia Ilievski for delivering
two very excellent speeches on the night. As Ms Wootten appropriately pointed out to the
guests, it was their first public speech since commencing their roles as student school leaders.
Well done to them both!
The club’s members enjoyed a very informative and inspiring presentation by Clontarf Director,
James Grant. The talk was followed by a Q&A session which enabled Mr Grant further
opportunity to demonstrate and showcase the successful impact his program is having on both
its participants and the school.
Once again I’d like to thank the Rotary Club of Orange and all its members for their kind and
generous support of our school and its students. We look forward to many more dinners.

SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS Quberider – Canobolas in Space!
Stage 4 AcTal have been working on an exciting project in Science over the last term. This
project was all about using computer coding to conduct scientific experiments on board the
International Space Station (ISS). AcTal have learnt how to code a Raspberry Pi computer using
the coding language called Python. The computer program the class has produced will travel
to the ISS via a space shuttle launched on 9th December. It will control ten different sensors that
will collect environmental data from within the ISS for fifteen minutes while it orbits the Earth.
The class will have the opportunity to examine the results once the data is returned to Earth.
Our main coding was completed by six volunteers, Josh Martin, Ayoub Mostafa, Lilly Mitchell,
Kaitlin Parish, Zac Miller and Isabelle Kent who spent two full days writing the code for our
experiment. They showed great problem solving, collaboration and communication skills as they
wrote the code with minimal assistance.
During the Quberider project AcTal has also studied the various roles that are needed to
complete a space mission, from doctors, scientists, engineers and lawyers. We examined the
laws of physics that are needed to ensure a safe delivery of payloads (including the one that
will take our computer code to the ISS). We have also looked into the physical and educational
requirements of the modern astronaut.
Observing Living Things
Year 7 Science have started their new topic of ‘The Living World’ this term. 7 Aria have started
working on their observational skills by collecting some insects from the wide variety that can
be found on the paddock. Aria have then used microscopes to look closely at the features of
our insect collection. They were able to draw and label diagrams of the main body parts of
an insect. They were amazed to discover the beautiful texture of a butterflies wing, the pointy
mouth parts of a bee and the complexity of an insect’s eye.
Senior Physics
After completing Year 11 getting swept away with different theories regarding the formation of
the Universe (just ask them about multiverses), Mr Boardman’s Physics class have begun their
Year 12 studies with the broad topic of ‘Space’ and a study of gravitational potential energy.
We are also lucky to have Destinee from Big Picture joining us this term as she gets a feel for the
stage 6 Science electives.

Extract from Central Western Daily 19-10-16
A representative touch football player and a member of
Royal Hawks’ Orange Netball Association division one grand
final netball side, Naden is now carving up the Aussie Rules
field.
Having only taken part in her first game of AFL last year,
Naden was again picked as a member of the NSW/ACT AFL
Indigenous team to take part in the 2016 Female Diversity
Championship, this year in Shepparton.
Her NSW/ACT kickstart side didn’t win, but Naden was
tremendous, winning the tournament’s Most Valuable Player
award while also earning selection in the Australian
Woomeras preliminary squad.
That squad will be cut next month, but given the sort of form the Canobolas Rural Technology High School
(CRTHS) student produced over the course of the week-long championship, the speedy rover is all but a
given to be named in the Aussie line-up.
“I didn’t think I’d make the team,” the modest Naden said.
“This is only my second year playing, so I didn’t think I’d make it. It’s a pretty good achievement.”
“I was pretty shocked though, I haven’t played a lot before and I don’t know as much as all the other girls
do, and they’re all really good.”
Her selection in the Woomeras squad is a gong Naden, given her nature, is inclined to talk down.
But her efforts on the field were sublime, with this excerpt from the AFL Tasmania website after Naden
helped NSW/ACT knock off the Tassie girls indicative of her influence on the field.
“Erin Naden backed up stunning performances on the first day with another blistering game,” the game
review read, before continuing.
“She showed her class with an outstanding run through the centre of the ground shrugging off a host of
opposition players to send the ball inside 50, helping her team 4 point win.”
Naden was also captain of the NSW/ACT side at the championships, one involving 200 participants from
Indigenous and Multicultural backgrounds come together and compete.
She says her speed was her biggest asset on the field.
It has been a busy start to Term 4 in the Girri Girri
Academy. The girls recently participated in the
Primary School Olympics day that was held at the
PCYC and run by Orange City Council. The
academy volunteered their services to help with the running and organisation of the event that
included primary school students from Orange East Public School and Bowen Public School.
This week the girls will also participate in a Domestic Violence day. The day will focus on raising
awareness and educating the girls on the current statistics and trends.
Our end of term reward trip is also coming up later on in the term, so students are reminded that
they must have full attendance to attend.
The touch teams played on Wednesday in Bathurst with the boys team played hard all day and
only had two subs, going down in each of their four games.
The girls defeated Mudgee High and Le Salle of Lithgow, but were beaten by St Mary’s of
Wellington and were then defeated in qualifying final by Mudgee. It was a great day.

STEM CENTRE NEWS Year 9 iSTEM
Laurie from the Confederation of Australian Motor
Sport (CAMS) called in to talk to Year 9 iSTEM
about race car design and aerodynamics last
week. He spent time explaining the history of the
technology in F1 racing, and why aerodynamics is
so beneficial for modern racing cars. Laurie
explained how some manufacturers bent the rules
to get an advantage of speed, cornering and grip
in races and he shared stories about his role in
CAMS and testing future race drivers for their
CAMS racing licence. Thanks for making the day
trip from Sydney, Laurie!
Following our successes with our hand
crafted CO2 powered dragsters and with
fresh knowledge of racing car design
from Laurie, 9iSTEM have moved on to
creating a computer aided design (CAD)
drawing for a CO2 powered F1 car.
Students are working through a series of
practical tasks using Autodesk Inventor.
Here is a screen shot of an F1 car body,
prior to the CO2 canister being added
along with the Aerodynamic spoiler.
