ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE AND OUR LADY OF THE LAKE/MOUNT CARMEL IS A ROMAN
CATHOLIC PARISH WITH THE EUCHARIST AS THE CENTER OF ITS LIFE. OUR MISSION, AS
DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST, IS TO BUILD UP THE KINGDOM OF GOD BY LEADING, NOURISHING
AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN WORD AND SACRAMENT.
From the Desk of the Pastor March 6, 2016
Last year Fr. Sorgie invited the Polish Community of the area to find a home here at St. James-Our Lady of the
Lake. Since that time, Mass and the sacraments have been celebrated at the Lake Church periodically since we
were lacking a Polish speaking priest on the parochial staff. Last month the Archdiocese assigned Fr. Szymon
Kurpios, who is seeking incardination into the Archdiocese, to the parish of St. James-Our Lady of the Lake.
Therefore, mass is being celebrated in Polish each Sunday at 12:30 at the Lake Church.
You may have noticed a new painting of the Madonna at the Lake Church. This is the image of the “Black
Madonna” or Our Lady of Czestochowa, an image dear to the hearts of all Polish people. The original icon is
housed in the Monastery of Jasna Gora in Poland, and is the most famous of Polish shrines, the greatest place of
pilgrimage and, for many, the spiritual capital of Poland. Many miraculous powers have been attributed to the
image.
The image is painted on wooden boards, reportedly by St. Luke who painted it on a table top from the house of
the Holy Family, and, legend has it, was discovered in Jerusalem by St. Helena in 362 A.D. It was brought to
Constantinople to be given to her son, the Emperor Constantine. The history of the icon prior to its arrival in
Poland is shrouded in mystery but legend tells us that the image came to the monastery Jasna Gora when it was
being brought to another location and the horse carrying it stopped at Czestochowa and refused to go any
further.
The image was badly damaged by Hussite raiders in 1430. The salvation of the monastery was attributed to the
icon when, in 1655, 180 local volunteers and 70 monks held off an invasion of Swedes for 40 days. This led to
King John II Casimir Vasa to crown the Madonna “Queen and Protector of Poland. As a boy in St. Adalbert’s
parish in the Bronx, I looked at a reproduction of this painting for many years. The image hanging in the Lake
Church was painted by a priest and given to the Polish Community here. As you look at the image add another
title to the Blessed Mother and let us pray for the protection of Our Lady of Czestochowa for all the people
of Carmel. Amen
Readings for the Fourth Sunday of Lent
First Reading: Joshua 5:9a, 10-12 - Joshua and the Israelites celebrated Passover in Jericho. This was the first time they had eaten the produce of the Promised Land. After this, there was no more bread sent from heaven because they were able to eat the yield of the land.
Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 - Paul tells us that anyone living in Jesus is a new creation because God has reconciled with us through Christ. As an ambassador for Jesus, Paul implores that the Corinthians be reconciled to God through Jesus.
Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 - The Pharisees grew disgusted with Jesus because of his compassion toward sinners. So Jesus told them a story of a son who squandered his inheritance. When a famine broke out, he returned home and asked his father to become a hired hand. His father instead welcomed him with a joyful celebration, just as God is overjoyed when a sinner returns to him.
We are collecting palm from last year.
Please bring in your old palm and deposit in the box in the lobby. Thank you.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown, NY
ST. SEBASTIAN’S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM
182 purchased - 270 Niches still available
Our Terrace and Columbarium are open. We have already celebrated Mass at the new Altar and have 89 niches engraved and interred. The price of a niche is $2,500, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, and would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Mrs. Maureen Larkin at 845-225-2079 on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones.

From the Parish Nurse
Juvenile Diabetes
Juvenile Diabetes (JD) is an autoimmune
disease and occurs when the body’s immune system
attacks the insulin producing cells (beta cells) of the
pancreas and destroys them. This makes the
pancreas unable to produce insulin.
Insulin is a hormone that your body produces. It is
carried to the cells through the blood and allows the
body to get energy from glucose in the food you
have eaten. Without insulin, our bodies cannot use
the glucose so it remains in our blood causing a very
high blood glucose level. This condition called
hyperglycemia has a number of symptoms:
•Increased thirst
(Often the first noticeable symptom in a child)
•Increased urination
•Increased blood glucose
•Sugar in the urine
