Pride, cont. from frontThere were 11 promotions.“They are the future of the policedepartment,” said Farrar.The department also presentedthe results of the PRIDE platoon.The platoon is a 14 week interven-tion program for at risk youth heldtwice a year. They are taught dis-cipline, respect, integrity and pridein themselves. For the youth wholast through the whole program ithas been life changing.

“It’s been a huge, huge success,”said newly promoted Lt. DeanHardin.There were two testimonies tothat success, Carmen Tinoco andRamona Andrade.Tinoco was a youth in the pro-gram. She said before the programshe was very angry, would get intofights, disrespected her mother andditched school. Now she says shehas her anger under control and isable to talk out her problems. In

fact she teaches kickboxing. Shenot only goes to school every daybut gets their early and spendstime in the attendance office whereshe has become friends with theoffice workers there.She also has a better relationshipwith her mother and family.“Now I feel that nothing can stopme from reaching my goal,” saidTinoco. The council and entirechamber gave her a standing ova-tion for her achievements.

Andrade is the mother of a grad-uate. She said that she was scaredeveryday for him because of his re-belliousness and was nervous thatany call she receives at night willbe from the police about him.She was not sure that the programwould work but she knew she hadto enroll him.“After the first weekend I got myson back,” said Andrede in tears.She says her son is doing well inschool and says ‘yes ma’am’ when

she ask him to do something.“It gave not only my son peacebut it gave my family peace,” shesaid. The program also requiresthat parents take classes too. Shesays she learned how to communi-cate with her son.The next program will begin Feb-ruary 24. Registration is nowclosed but recruitment for the nextclass will being this July.
