ADVICE FOR PREPARING THE PRELIMINARY APPLICATION
• Plan ahead – give yourself plenty of time to prepare.
• Check your eligibility for the scheme – eligibility may be more flexible than you think.
• Tailor your application to the funder – make sure it is cancer relevant for CRUK!
• Read the guidelines! • Please call us! • Make all your lab friends/mentors read it (and
rip it to shreds, if necessary)!
WRITING THE PRELIMINARY APPLICATION
You will be assessed on: • Quality of the science – is it novel and interesting? • Relevance to Cancer Research UK’s goals – is it relevant to cancer biology,
prevention, treatment? • Track record and potential of the applicant – have they published well, do people in
the field know who they are, can they do the job? • Research environment – is this the best place for this type of work, will the applicant
have the right support?
WRITING THE PRELIMINARY APPLICATION
What you need to provide: • Coherent research question • Aims that fit together but are not dependent on one another (contingencies) • Enough information in your research plan to make it clear what you plan to do • Evidence it is the correct approach to address your hypotheses (some prelim data,
ref to previous publications) and evidence you are the person to do it.
• An indication that the proposed work will allow you to establish a ‘research niche’
ADVICE FOR BURSARY SCHEMES
• Clear question and research plan
• Feasible within timeframe
• Clear learning objectives – learn specific skills/produce prelim data for a fellowship application
• Evidence you will have the right environment and support (mentors) to help you complete the proposed research
SUCCESS RATES FOR CLINICAL RADIOLOGISTS
• Overall success rate for Clinician Scientist Fellowships is:
• Success rate for Clinical Radiologists from outline application is: 50%
* From the full application stage. From the outline stage the success rate was 46%.
