T he widening reach of social media iscreating a ground shift in the newsindustry. And there is much to belearned as we are still in the early days ofexperimentation.
This is especially true in the realm ofmobile web. Last year, a report found thatsocial media drove 34 percent of mobileweb traf c as opposed to 17 percent ofdesktop traf c.
The continuous change in our consumptionhabits and the increased interactivity ofsocial media will ultimately make mobile acritical gateway for content.
But to use the parlance of journalism, wemust not bury – or lose sight of – the lede:
Social media is not the boon of thetraditional journalism industry, nor is it a
panacea. It is merely a natural extension ofour technical evolution and it is up to us tosteer it in the right direction.
We convene today to de ne a new narrativein which social media, and digitisation ingeneral, is at the heart of all journalistic
progress. It is the mission of the GlobalEditors Network to bridge the gap betweenthe different generations of editors, betweencontent creators and technology providers,and between established media and newstorytellers.
And for the next three days of the GENSummit 2015, we invite you all to take partin de ning that narrative.
We would like to shed light on someof our exciting programmes and theirculmination points at this year’s Summit.The Editors Lab Final, the “world cup”of news hackathons, brings together morethan 40 contestants from all over theworld to compete in creating an innovativenewsroom prototypes. Similarly, theStartups for News Final will crown a
startup with a unique offering to journalistsand journalism.
Our main evening event, the DataJournalism Awards Ceremony, willhonour the best in data reporting andnewsgathering. Supported by Google,CaixaBank and the Knight Foundation, theAwards are an international competitionthat rewards the most innovative data-driven journalism projects. This year, weselected 14 winners from more than 480entries from all over the world.
We also invite you to visit our bootcampson wearables and virtual reality journalism.
Participants can visit the Project Syriademo space: an immersive storytellingexperience that aims to give voice to the
plight of the Syrian children affected by theongoing war.
Finally, this summit allows us to introducethe Climate Publishers Network, a
collaboration initiative by 25 founding partners (see page 12) that aims tosyndicate articles related to climate changefree of charge in the run-up to COP21 inParis.

Nearly a third of the Syrian population has been displaced in the ongoing war inthe country and no group has been as severely a ected as children. Project Syria,
one of the projects on display by Emblematic Group, is an immersive journalismproject that aims to tell the plight of these children; it uses new virtual realitytechnologies to put the audience “on scene” and evoke the feeling of “beingthere”.
Other projects on display are “Use of Force”, which recreates the story ofAnastasio Hernandez Rojas, a Mexican immigrant who was beaten and tasered todeath by 12 US border patrol agents; “Hunger in L.A.”, which explores the growingissue of hunger in the Los Angeles area; and “Trayvon Martin”, which takes a lookat the events of the Trayvon Martin case, which swept America in 2012.
