What’s so great about Facebook?

• Brings communities of people together • Free. • Popular with all ages. • Keep up with people you care about. • Allow others to keep up with you via your

posts of text, photos and links. • Link to articles, chat with other FB members,

invite people to events.

Before we begin…

• You need to be prepared to tell Facebook your name, birth date, sex and email address.

• You need access to your email account, because Facebook might send you an email to verify who you are.

Let’s get started! Open a browser and go to www.facebook.com

Help and Privacy are at the bottom of every page

This is NOT Step 1

You’ll have to do this step from your own computer. (No, this isn’t really Step 3, 2 or 1.)

If you see this message…

…it means Facebook sent you this email to verify you are who you said.

Open your email and click on this link

Everyone will get an email like this. Save it for later.

On this page, go to Step 3 (the real Step 1).

You can activate your mobile phone after you’ve used Facebook a while.

Click “Edit your settings.”

“On Facebook, your name, profile picture, gender and networks are visible to everyone. Also, by default, apps have access to your friends list and any information you choose to share with everyone.”

Once you give your friends’ names and email addresses to Facebook and to any games or apps, you cannot get them back. Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 30

If you have not subscribed to any app, there are no settings to edit.

Click Edit Settings for “Info accessible through your friends.”

“Use the settings below to control which of your information is available to applications, games and websites when your friends use them. The more info you share, the more social the experience.”

To start, select the most restrictive option – uncheck all these boxes.

Click Friends Only button for “Game and app activity”…

If you select Customize, you’ll get this pop-up window for “Custom Privacy.”

For now, select “Only Me.” You can change it later.

Click Edit Settings button for “Instant personalization.”

You’ll get a video window…

Skip the video for now and instead click on “Learn More,”…

Click Edit Settings button for “Public search.”

When people do a Web search on your name (Google), do you want your Facebook page to

appear on their search-results page?

From any page, click on “Account” in the blue bar at the top. Then click “Account Settings” in the drop-down box.

Another way to get to your Privacy settings.

Click “change” for Account Security.

In the drop-down menu, click the box to check-mark “Secure Browsing (https)” and “Send me an email.”

Every once in a while, come back here to “Download Your Information.”

If you ever want to leave Facebook, download your information and then click “deactivate.” You can actually delete

your account by going here: https://ssl.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account

Come back later to explore and understand each of the other pages of settings for “My Account.”

Make your selection for “Allow adds on platform pages…” and then scroll down and make a selection for “Show my social actions in Facebook ads to…”

Click “News Feed.”

This is your Home, Welcome page.

Now you need to add the names and email addresses of your Friends…

…in order to share what you post and to see what they post.

Try using the Facebook friend finder.

Depending on which email program you use, you might need to convert the information in your email address book into CSV format so Facebook can put your address book entries into your Facebook Friends list. Text that’s in the CSV (comma-separated-value) format is what gets pulled out of one software program so it can be put into another software program. Each output item is separated by a comma from surrounding items, and each output text item is surrounded by "double quotes“. So output from an email address book would look something like this: “Mike Starks”, “michael.starks0@gmail.com”, “Zionsville”,

You can create and name your own Friends lists and give more access to one and less access to another.

Facebook asks, “What’s on your mind?” and “What are you planning?”

Your answers to these questions are the posts that show up on your friends’ News Feed pages.

Life is more than text.

You can also post photos, a link to a Web page and/or a video file.

After you have some people in your Friends list, you will start seeing their posts on your Home News Feed page.

Your Wall is in your Profile. It has your Profile information, all the items that you have posted, plus items by Friends whom you have allowed to post on your Wall.

“The New Profile” This page has a promotional video and a guide for using the features of Facebook’s new Profile.
