Before we begin…

• You need to be prepared to tell Facebook your name, birth date, sex and email address.

• You need access to your email account, because Facebook might send you an email to verify who you are.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 6

Let’s get started! Open a browser and go to www.facebook.com

Internet Explorer Mozilla Firefox

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 7

Help and Privacy are at the bottom of every page

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 8

This is NOT Step 1

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 9

This is not Step 2 (or Step 1)

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 10

You’ll have to do this step from your own computer. (No, this isn’t really Step 3, 2 or 1.)

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 11

If you see this message…

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 12

…it means Facebook sent you this email to verify you are who you said.

Open your email and click on this link

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 13

Everyone will get an email like this. Save it for later.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 14

On this page, go to Step 3 (the real Step 1).

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 15

You can activate your mobile phone after you’ve used Facebook a while.

Not today

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 16

You have to tell Facebook… …but you don’t have

to tell anyone else.

You can always change everything but your name, age, sex and email address.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 17

Look for confirmation.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 18

Click “privacy settings”

Skip the video for now and instead click on “Learn More,”…

…which goes to this page…

…which says:

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 37

Your “information available to everyone” includes the Facebook posts you have read.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 41

When you’re finished, save your changes by clicking this button.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 42

From any page, click on “Account” in the blue bar at the top. Then click “Account Settings” in the drop-down box.

your account by going here: https://ssl.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 48

Come back later to explore and understand each of the other pages of settings for “My Account.”

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 49

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 50

Make your selection for “Allow adds on platform pages…” and then scroll down and make a selection for “Show my social actions in Facebook ads to…”

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 51

Click “News Feed.”

This is your Home, Welcome page.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 52

Now you need to add the names and email addresses of your Friends…

…in order to share what you post and to see what they post.

Try using the Facebook friend finder.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 53

Depending on which email program you use, you might need to convert the information in your email address book into CSV format so Facebook can put your address book entries into your Facebook Friends list. Text that’s in the CSV (comma-separated-value) format is what gets pulled out of one software program so it can be put into another software program. Each output item is separated by a comma from surrounding items, and each output text item is surrounded by "double quotes“. So output from an email address book would look something like this: “Mike Starks”, “michael.starks0@gmail.com”, “Zionsville”,

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 54

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 55

You can create and name your own Friends lists and give more access to one and less access to another.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 56

Facebook asks, “What’s on your mind?” and “What are you planning?”

Your answers to these questions are the posts that show up on your friends’ News Feed pages.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 57

Life is more than text.

You can also post photos, a link to a Web page and/or a video file.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 58

www.facebook.com

After you have some people in your Friends list, you will start seeing their posts on your Home News Feed page.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 59

Your Wall is in your Profile. It has your Profile information, all the items that you have posted, plus items by Friends whom you have allowed to post on your Wall.

Michael Henry Starks michael.starks0@gmail.com 60

“The New Profile” This page has a promotional video and a guide for using the features of Facebook’s new Profile.
