PICTURE THISDebbie Harry and her band Blondiehave chosen to record a song writtenby Christchurch musician Matt
Barus (of Dukes fame) for their nextalbum. Dukes supported Blondieand the Pretenders on their 2010New Zealand tour, Barus explains.I pretty much pulled out ParallelLines and tried to come up with a fewsongs that might t that feel. My wifeLauren [LA Mitchell] came up with akiller bridge and off went two songs.Barus isnt sure why that particularsong appealed to Harry and jokes thathe likes to think he nailed what itslike to be in the head of a 60-plus newwave icon.

Late last month Xbox, owned by softwaregiant Microsoft held its unveiling ofthe Xbox One with the slogan All YourEntertainment, All In One. With the aim to
harmonize your games, live TV and lms.
You can interact with the Xbox One usingvoice and hand gestures, so no more remotecontrols needed with a Kinect motion andsound sensing device that can even senseyour heart rate.
Some gamers are said to be disappointedabout the focus on multimedia capabilitiesat the conference. The main cause forcontroversy is said to be the lack ofcompatibility with Xbox 360 games (which isnot surprising). It is also said the Xbox Ones
dependence on a daily internet connectionto keep games functional, even if playingof ine, may be a pain for some gamers. Therewill be no rentals and cloud storage of gamesmeans no more trading or selling games withfriends and gaming retailers.
Playstation 4 was unveiled in February bySony with the tagline Play. There is nodoubt that the focus is on gaming and thehandset DUALSHOCK4 with new featuresincluding inbuilt motion sensors, touchpad and share button. Playstation will berevealing more at the E3 gaming expo in Los
Angeles this week. At the event Microsoftand Sony will be battling for attention fortheir next generation consoles.

The original, essential line-up of Jaz Coleman, Youth,Geordie and Paul Ferguson play for the rst timeever in New Zealand. Alt-heroes of the 80s, with theirroots in spiky post-punk, the bands seminal hitsencouraged other emerging bands to carry the torch, including Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Foo Fighters, FaithNo More, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein and Tool.
Once a supporting player, having been a drummer forCassette, Luke Buda, Hell Is Other People and not tomention from a tour of duty as part of Fly My Pretties hes now released his debut album Bleed Your HeartOut to rave reviews. Calling it a labour of love, thealbum is full of cleverly crafted tunes.
The Auckland kids are stoked to be heading back tothe capital, as its been so long they cant rememberthe last time they were down that way so to speak. Were pretty happy to welcome back the band too,so dont miss this rare live outing, supported byfavourites Carb on Carb fresh from their recentAustralian tour.
Prepping for their 2013 album release, see them nowbefore they get too famous! Ghost Wave is hauntingyour ears and stirring your soul. Ghosty started outin late 2010, struggling to make ends meet after theirrecording gear was stolen around Christmas.

Their energetic and funlive set includes a good portion of songs from theirpast incarnation as Dungeon.
A fusion of hip-hop, soul and funk, the band is aforce to be reckoned with. Youll be toe-tapping andshaking it. Demand for their live show has seen EWHperform worldwide, appearing at festivals such asGlastonbury, Dour, Sonar, Sziget, The Big Chill, SXSW,Gilles Petersons Worldwide and New Yorks CMJ.See them before they depart for this years northernsummer.

Its hard to believe its been overtwenty years since Soundgarden,The Smashing Pumpkins, StoneTemple Pilots, Tool and Alice InChains rose to fame on the crest
of a relentless hard-rock/grungeshockwave that would nallysound the death bell for 80s hairmetal and reshape the rock n rolllandscape for years to come. Itseven harder to believe that aftercountless hiatuses, break-ups,reunions, questionable side-projectsand unlikely supergroups the originalbands are all back in action, auntingtheir seasoned wares to the iTunesgeneration.
Two things have always set Alice InChains apart from the rest of theirgrunge-era cohorts - the distinctiveand uncompromisingly sludgy heavy
metal rif ng of guitarist Jerry Cantrelland the unmistakable drawl oftroubled frontman Layne Staley.
On this, the bands fth studio full-length and second with Comes WithThe Fall vocalist William Duvall(following Staleys untimely demise in2002), the band attempts to recreatethe magic that allowed their earlywork, as well as their most recentalbum (the Grammy-nominatedBlack Gives Way To Blue ), to blurthe boundaries between metal andgrunge, creating a formidable sound, equally ferocious and melodic.
The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here featurescopious amounts of dizzyingly heavygrooves, stomping drums and anabundance of jarringly abrasivehooks. The unrelenting chant of thetrademark Alice harmonies ooze
with a calculated menace - the sonicequivalent of an ominous warningsnarled by a sinister gure from theshadows of a malevolent underworld.Credit is due to DuVall who now
comfortably lls Staleys shoes with a vocal style and tone similarenough to the late frontmans to beunmistakably Alice, without driftinginto dodgy cover version territory.
Standout tracks include openerHollow, an expansive juggernautwith an infectious anti-refrain whichis reminiscent of 1992s Would?as well as the growling Voices, aspattered anthem which sees DuVallchannel Staley and Scott Weiland in abarbed, desperate plea for help.
The bands 1992 single Rooster dealtwith themes of war, death and loss, and in the twenty years since, theband has personally experiencedmore than their fair share of these. Now seasoned veterans themselves(as well as the eponymousdinosaurs of the album title), theyhave produced another solidalbum - unapologetically heavy yetundeniably melodic - that is likely tokeep old fans happy and may attract afew new ones.

Unlike like Peter, who cried wolf and then got eaten, you should learn your lesson and not herd sheepanywhere where there are wolves. Or coyotes. Orbears. Anything scary really with claws and teeth. Socome and enjoy Crying Wolf play a mix of originalsand covers (honky tonk, bluegrass, folk, and sometraditional tunes).
GeorgeFMs Thane Kirby and Dave Hull get all mushyover tracks from the yesteryear and present day. Youtoo will feel like you are in a musical time warp asthey take you back to a time when the tunes werebetter and bass more thumping and heavier than ever before.
This past year has seen BBQ travel around the globefrom Runion island off the coast of Madagascar toCarnegie Hall. Along the way smashing shows on theHudson River and all over the USA and Europe notto mention scaling volcanoes and even head buttingsome marine life. Oh, and made a bit of music too.
Ever been to the library? In place of books and study, they have books but without the study. Its fun timeswith the worlds best cocktails (IMO) and desserts. Andalso a vintage bathtub, which yes, you can sit in andtake photos. Theyve got a sweet two for one dessertnight accompanied by live music. Perfect combo.

FILM OF THE WEEK
oN SCrEEN
A feature-length music documentary charting theturbulent, dramatic and often unbelievable journey ofthe British post-punk industrial legends Killing Joke. The lm brings together three decades of archivefootage with two decades of never before seen newdocumentary footage and unprecedented access tothe members of Killing Joke, their management, musicproducers, industry gures and associates.
This 80s show which followed on from the hugesuccess of the original series delivers tales thatare fraught with the bizarre and unexpected, thatchallenge our very concept of reality, and blend theordinary with the extraordinary. Various stars, such asMorgan Freeman, Robert Carradine and Dame HelenMirren, steal the show in subsequent installments.
Days away from release and already labeled aScientology plot to brainwash our youth, WillSmith has gone from hip, smart-talking, cool guy toeveryones favourite box of ce poison. Whether youwant to see this for the excellent use of CGI when itcomes to futuristic animals or you want to pick holesin the plot, its worth a gander.
Nawwww, everyone loves to revisit their childhoodmovies and ahh and ooo at the cute animatedanimals. Left alone to brave the taunting of the othercircus animals, who mock him for his peculiar looks,Dumbo con des his sorrows in Timothy Mouse whoreminds Dumbo of his unique potential.
Lets be honest if you liked Blue Valentine , chancesare this might be your cup of tea. Featuring RyanHunk Gosling in yet another brooding, angst role, hes clearly making up for all those heartthrob years.Featuring his real-life girlfriend as his girlfriend thisis a tale of ghting for family and doing right by yourlady. And stuff.

Like an ever-so-slightly more literaryTransformers sequel, Baz LuhrmansThe Great Gatsby is a sense-
shattering storm of lush imagery, beautiful people and other aestheticwonders. Its the modern blockbusteras classic book adaptation. I had aball watching it, but the impact is
eeting and the emotions shallow.Like Transformers .
By replacing giant robots andexplosions with luxurious mansions, dazzling costumes and immaculatemake-up, The Great Gatsby invites anair of super cial respectability that isperhaps re ected in its lead character a distortion of the American Dreamwho built up his fortune with ill-gotten gains.
DiCaprio is well-suited (literally!)to the part hes nally starting toleave behind the boyishness that hasalways threatened his believabilityas a grown-up. As Jay Gatsby, he
cuts a ne gure, but the deeplyfelt obsession at the heart of hischaracter doesnt totally shine
through.
Tobey Maguire acquits himselfwith dignity as the audiencessomewhat blank proxy andCarey Mulligan oozes sensuality, almost to the point where I waswilling to forgive her characterstransgressions. The mostimpressive performance in the lmis given by Aussie Joel Edgerton, wholly convincing as a richentitled jerk.
But its the lmmaking that is thetrue star here, and while it neverstops calling attention to itself, its
still a wonder to behold I haventfelt this drunk on cinematic beautysince Life of Pi.

Dont be like The Boomtown Rats Mondays something everyoneshould like. Colourful shelves of spirits and l iquor lined across thearched windows beckon people into The Monday Room Restaurantand Bar, Christchurchs newest place to kick back. Designed to be ahideaway into which to escape, a grand entrance is followed by rich, textured patterns and the juxtaposition of old with new creates aninteresting, inviting atmosphere. The highly detailed museum-likeillustrations under large bell glasses are reminiscent of Victoriantimes except the images are ever-changing on iPads. A deliciousmenu and a great range of drinks including cocktails the dark cosybar area gives way to a more modern, covered outdoor seating/smoking area with a log re.

D p v g b a resident of this country, Jaz Colemansseminal neu- unk- oth out t Killin Joke ha e ne er efore layed in
otearoa. ow on the ack of a worldwide sin les est of tour the
ori inal, essential line-u of Coleman, Youth, geordie and paul Fer usonnally ut their feet down on a local sta e or two.
t seems extraordinary that it has taken this lon for Killin Joke to layhere, articularly since the e er-mercurial Coleman has li ed here on andoff since the mid-1980s.
Well, no-ones asked us to, says Coleman of their a sence. Lets e er-fectly honest a out this. f theres no demand ut 25 years on nally thereis. can lay in my own country. m lookin forward to it.
hat said, Killin Joke are world citizens. Coleman in articular, whodes ite ha in land on an island in the auraki gulf slee s from couch tocouch, of no xed a ode.
like to mo e around. tay with different eo le. dont want to amass of ossessions and all the tra in s that o with those. When on tour Youth
collects hundreds of al ums and shi s them all ack to the UK. ha ethree airs of ants, and my sta e clothes. hats it!
Most recently, he was han in with a local roadcaster in the a artmentri ht next to the groo e guide of ces. owe er, des ite the close roxim-ity, ha e to call halfway across the world. On the line from eattle, hesnot in the est of oices.
My oice went com letely at one oint, ut it came ack miraculously,he ex lains. We had two shows to do in one day. just mashed it withmedication. You know, e ne er missed a show in 35 years. et y on thelo e and su ort of the audience!
Killin Joke is only one of Colemans many rojects, who also com osed
classical music. he alt-heroes of the 80s ha e a articular rand of s ikyost- unk roducin hits such as Lo e Like blood, Kin s and Queens
and i hties lus a notoriously unner in and in-yer-face li e show.hey e een the encoura in force ehind acts such as ine nch ails,
Ministry, Faith o More, Marilyn Manson and Rammstein.
Killin Joke were on a hiatus until 2003, when they e an roducin some
of the most ital music of their career remindin e eryone what was sos ecial a out them in the rst lace. but it was their most recent al um, MMXII , which re-landed their ty ically olitical and a itatin sound
its a loud, rindin and relentless take on industrial metal. ctually, its incredi ly cathartic. Like a rimal scream so different fromthe orchestral work. Killin Joke concerts are where e eryone just meetsu , like a forum. n oronto, my oice had just one, ut they cheered meon. nd that touches me dee ly. he lo e for our and ne er ceases toamaze me. We e een oin 35 years. Most ands et nasty (o er moneyand creati e ower) y then. but we s lit the money equally (to a oid that).
o 35 years later my and mates are my est friends.

Call of Duty. No three words stir as many emotions in any modern gamer. Good?Bad? Individual preference, of course, will vary. One thing you probably arent, though, is indifferent.
Activisions agship shooter franchise isnt just big; its the biggest and not justin gaming. Black Ops II , the latest in the series, made more than $600 million in the
rst 24 hours it was on sale, making it the biggest entertainment launch (not justgame) of 2012.
It will have surprised precisely zero observers, then, that theres going to beanother one. What may have raised an eyebrow or two, however, is that Activisionarent taking the obvious route the sequel that hits shelves (and, soon after, millions of homes) in November isnt going to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.Instead, In nity Ward the company that invented the franchise have createdan all story with all new characters and no link whatsoever to the games thatcame before it.
Called Call of Duty: Ghosts , the game is set in the near future. This future is a grimplace; precisely why has yet to be detailed, but something catastrophic has
occurred, and the US (yeah, its one of those narratives) has been almost wiped offthe map. By what, who knows; what I can tell you, as a result of my behind-the-scenes time with the game in LA, is that this is no Homefront-style invasion thatsimply caught the States off guard.
The land itself appears to have been smashed and broken, by what the developersdescribe as a mass event, leaving the military devastated, the government indisarray, and the country crippled. One of few survivors, the idea is that you atop-tier soldier type link up with members of other Special Forces units to forman elite ghting unit (the titular ghosts).
One of the sequences we were shown (which was set under water) suggested,by way of a submerged and destroyed lighthouse, that something far moresigni cant than a simple attack has taken place. Exactly what happens is far fromclear at this point, but it certainly seems more interesting that some sort of blackop in some dank jungle some place.
Its a bold move for the 10th game in a series to make, and I for one cant wait toget my hands on the nal product.

t s y h h s s y c h s fh y .After three beautifully crafted Uncharted games, all eyes have been
on developers Naughty Dog to see if they could replicate their earlier successwith a new franchise. The Last of Us , which releases on the 14th June, is a boldaf rmation that they can.
The Last of Us , for the few who havent heard, is a third-person survival-actiongame that takes place in the very near future. Humanity is on the brink ofextinction due to a parasitic fungus that has wiped out millions.
A heavy, gritty struggle for survival, the game tasks players with taking Joeland Ellie on a trek across the USA, attempting as they do to avoid the deaththat awaits around every corner. Danger will come not only in the form of theinfected, but also in fellow survivors who are so desperate theyll do anything forfood or supplies (including cold-blooded murder.)
As fans of Uncharted will expect, the game is full of plot intricacies, deepcharacter development, and there are even a few surprises thrown in. The Last of Us is a tour de force that changes pace alarmingly - a roller-coaster ride that has
to be experienced rst hand to be fully appreciated. The third-person controls are slick and the character animations incredibly
uid. Joels movements in particular are nearly faultless, whether hesengaged in intense violent combat or simply climbing a wall or picking upammunition.
Its the dynamicness of Ellie that makes The Last of Us stand apart from mostother games, though. Shes not just a sidekick or an inconvenient escort; despiteher youthful age, Ellie is more than capable of holding her own.
The Last of Us is a memorable gaming experience. One that makes me wonderhow the PS3 console could be nearing the end of its life-cycle. The comparisons toUncharted cant be ignored and, while it might appear a safe move by NaughtyDog on the surface, their new franchise undoubtedly pushes the boundaries in awelcome new direction.
Its harrowing, emotionally driven, action-packed and impossible to put down
once you start.
