ZERO EXPONENT

GROUP 7

9- RECTO

Law of Exponent*Zero Ex-

ponent

> According to the "zero rule", any

nonzero base number is equal to one.

> If a number (other than o) has zero as

an exponent, it equals to one.

It may be hard to believe but it is true, no

matter what number (except zero).

HOW TO SOLVE A ZERO EXPONENT ?

1.Write the answer "1" for any base raised to the zero power. For instance, 3^0 =1

2.Write the answer "1" for a base within parentheses that has a zero exponent. For example, (5)^0=1

3.Write the answer "1" for a base with a zero expo-nent that is located within a fraction. Then simplify the fraction if possible. For instance, 1/5^0 = 1/1, which is "1" when you simplify the fraction. Another example would be 2^0/6 = 1/6. This fraction is al-ready in its simplest form.

4Replace a base raised to the zero power within an addition, subtrac-tion, division or multiplication problem as "1" and continue the opera-tions of the problem. For instance:4^0 + 9 = 1 + 9 = 107^0 - 1 = 1 - 1 = 020^0 / 2 = 1 / 2 = 0.5540^0 x 40 = 1 x 40 = 40

HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES:ANY NUMBER (EXCEPT 0) TO THE ZERO POWER IS EQUAL TO 1.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE EXCERCISES ?

3. −50  =  ?

Answer: 1

4. (½)0  =  ?

Answer:1

5. 3· 100  =  ?

Answer:3

TAKE NOTE THIS NOTE IN YOUR NOTEBOOK :

As long as 1 is being multiplied by at least one 0, the end result is 0. There-fore we can conclude that 0 to any positive exponent is always zero.

Another special case occurs with 00. Zero with an exponent of zero is undefined, and cannot be calculated.Be careful not to the rules for zero expo-nents! Zero to any positive power is always zero, because no matter how many times you multiply the 1 by zero the answer will always be zero. But 00 is undefined.

THANK YOU!
