0. Bem-Vindo!
It is indeed a great pleasure to WELCOME YOU in Porto, at Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde,
Instituto Politécnico do Porto (ESTSP.IPP) for the 2014 ERG Meeting!
I am sure it will be an excellent opportonity to, once again, exchange experiences and ideas
between colleagues from so many European countries!
Since life is not only work (…!), we invite you to stay a few more days, in order to visit and enjoy the
city!
Let us give you some good reasons: like in 2012, Porto was elected again the Best European
Destination 2014 by the European citizens. Porto, also known as the "Cidade Invicta" (unvanquished
city), has all the charm of towns which happily cohabit with their river. You can stroll along the Douro
River (meaning river of gold) in the Ribeira, fly over it by helicopter or discover Porto‘s architecture,
its amazing landscapes and magnificent bridges by taking a cruise on this majestic river. Porto is also
a sea city and in the briefest of time a tram will bring you to Foz do Douro’s gentle beaches, face to
face with the magnificent Atlantic Ocean.

Don’t forget: always validate your ANDANTE ticket
Always validate your ANDANTE ticket when you start your
travel, and once again when you change to another line or
vehicle;
For correct validation, put your ANDANTE ticket near the
validation machine. If a green light appears, your validation
is correct. If a red light appears, the ticket is not validated so
you should retry it again or charge your ANDANTE,
whenever that might be the case.

Brief History
ESTSP (School of Allied Health Sciences) is the “Health Faculty” from the Polytechnic Institute of
Porto (IPP), where it has been integrated since February 2006.
ESTSP was the latest school to be integrated in the IPP universe, the largest Polytechnic Institution in
Portugal, the first in the ranking of Polytechnics, and, in conjunction with the biggest national
universities, in the top ranking segments of the national educational system. The existence of ESTSP
goes back to 1980, directly reflecting and proudly assuming its role in the last three decades of
evolution, which occurred simultaneously in the national health system and in the higher education
system in Portugal.
ESTSP has consolidated its position in the public superior education system, since having the highest
grades of access to the Polytechnic institutions in the Health Technologies area on a national level. It
hosts 13 undergraduate courses and 6 masters’ degrees while promoting as well several
postgraduate courses and applied research units. At this moment, there is approximately 2200
students (both in the undergraduate and postgraduate courses) including master’s degrees, 238
teachers, approximately 600 clinical supervisors and 44 administrative staff members.
Since 2008/2009, all the undergraduate and master’s courses are in accordance with the Bologna
Declaration, assuming ESTSP role and commitment to contribute actively to the establishment of an
European space of higher education, focused on the harmonization and comparison of procedures
and the excellence of results, promoting the attraction of new students and teachers.

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has been implemented since then. All its undergraduate
courses are involved in international mobility programs, with special relevance for the ERASMUS
program, with an each-year rising number of participants (both in and out).
Considering the policy of proximity and displacement/immersion in the communities, there is a
special focus on services rendered within the local community. With this in mind, ESTSP has a mobile
unit/mobile teaching clinic which is used with the sole purpose of rending services within these
areas.
ESTSP constantly develops and enhances its processes; both on a teaching as well as administrative
level, allowing the students to learn in a challenging environment and to develop skills to be
competent and motivated health professionals.
The commitment with Quality is ensured by maintaining a Quality System based on the requisites of
the NP EN ISO 9001:2008 Standard.

7. Enjoy Porto!
TOP 5 - THINGS TO DO
1. Feel the history at World Heritage Porto Historical Centre
In 1996, the historical centre was classified as a World Heritage Site, based on its historical,
architectural and social qualities. Those who wander its narrow lanes - will see that there is no staged
scenery – will get to meet the people who live there, smell the aromas of home-cooking, see the
clothes drying on the balconies, the cats peeking out from behind the doors, the children playing in
the street, hear the conversations between neighbors and the radio music that bounces off the
windows.
2. Experience Port Wine
Port wine is present in this city in a multitude of forms and sensations: whether in a wine or a
gourmet shop; at a guided tasting in one of the wine cellars, among the casks and mashing tubs; in
the company of a cheese board and dried fruit aperitifs; a stay at a wine hotel; at a relaxing moment
in a spa; at a meal at one of the Wine Ambassador restaurants. Whatever you choose to do, let
yourself be carried away by your senses, for then you can be sure that your experience will be an
unforgettable one!
3. Indulge yourself in the city center - Baixa
The buildings in the city centre create a curious mosaic of different architectural styles, from
Neoclassical to Art Nouveau, amongst which the Livraria Lello stands out, one of the three most
beautiful bookshops in the world.

In the city centre you will find all kinds of shopping options - commercial streets, local markets
(Bolhão), and shopping centers, as well as several traditional restaurants and cafés (Majestic).
Daytime and nightlife entertainment options, catering to all tastes, also thrive here, filling the
streets.
4. Get to know contemporary architecture
On a par with the historic legacy for which it is well-known, Porto also explores its identity in terms of
sophistication and contemporariness.
The city of Porto reveals the excellence of the works of two Pritzer awarded local architects –
Eduardo Souto Moura and Álvaro Siza, as well as international architects like Solà-Morales or Rem
Koolhaas.
The Serralves Foundation and the Casa da Música contribute both as architectural icons and centers
for distinctive cultural offerings.
5. How to make the most of the outdoors - River and Sea
Porto is a riverside city, also bathed by the Atlantic that welcomes us with its pleasant beaches,
bordered by appetizing esplanades. The Marinas and the Ribeira docks welcome leisure and tourist
boats and both up and down the water course there are multiple opportunities to practice water
sports such as sailing, rowing, canoeing, diving, surfing and water-skiing.
In addition to all this, you can also enjoy the peace and quiet that the diversity of parks and gardens
around the city offer you.
