I’ll show you how to use a mouse

On your desk is a keyboard

this is the spacebar Press it now

You’re going to use the spacebar to work your way

through this program.

Press it again now

Well done – it worked!

Remember – whenever you want to move the program on,

press the spacebar

Press it when you see the red tick

Now, about this mouse …

The computer’s mouse looks like this

This is how you hold it …

• Keep it flat on the desk

• Put your hand on top of it

• Put your first finger on the left- hand button

The pointer shows your position

on the screenand

the mouse controls the pointer

Hold the mouse and move it in little circles,

as though you were polishing the desk

Try it now

Can you see the pointer

move?

To go up, move the mouse away from you

To go left,move the mouse to the left

Try moving the pointer

to each square

To go right,move the mouse to the right

To go down, move the mouse towards you

Can you point to each of the stars on this screen?

(don’t click, just point)

As well as pointing with the mouse, you can select

items on the screen by clicking

Point to this star

Keep the pointer on the star and press down quickly to click on the left- hand button on the mouse

You can click onWords on a menu bar

drop-down menu

Then you can click on any words in the drop-down menu

You can click onOptions in a dialog box

then you have to click on OK to confirm your choice

Mouse pointers sometimes change shape

Different pointers do different things

• arrow pointer for pointing and clicking

• hand for an automatic link to another document

Now you know how to use the mouse

You have already seen some Windows features

• Menu bar

• Icons

• Drop-down menu

Now let’s look at some more Windows features

The desktop is the screen you see at first

The desktop’s background is called wallpaper

It can be a photo, a pattern, a plain colour – anything

This one is a photo of a train station

The programs you use are sometimes displayed as icons on the desktop

If the program icons you want are not on the desktop,

click on Start then Programs

No matter what the desktop wallpaper or the icons on it look like, when

you use any Windows program you will see lots of things that always look

the same

You will see similar screens on all Windows programs

Word (word processing)

Excel (spreadsheet)

Access (database)

Let’s look at some icons that are used in Windows

• Minimise - if you click on this icon

–it shrinks the page to an icon at the bottom of the screen

This is what a minimised program looks like

Want the program back?Just click on the minimised icon

more icons …• Maximise - if you click on this icon

–it enlarges the view so that it fills the entire screen

This is what a maximised screen looks like

and finally …• Close - if you click on this icon

– the program closes down

It’s gone!

You can have several programs open at the

same time

• The blue Title bar shows the program you are using

(any other programs are shown in the background)
