LHC: the plan toward High Luminosity

SimonaRolli,HL-LHCCMSUpgradeCD-1IPR

Priority Within HEP

•  ✔1.UsetheHiggsbosonasanewtoolfordiscovery–  ExclusiverealmofLHC

•  2.Pursuethephysicsassociatedwithneutrinomass–  AddressedbytheU.S.LBNFprogram,LSST,IceCube(both

NSFMREFCprojects)•  ✔3.Identifythenewphysicsofdarkmatter

–  ManycomplementaryexperimentsincludingtheLHC

•  4.Understandcosmicacceleration:darkenergyandinflation–  Addressedbye.g.LSST

•  ✔5.Exploretheunknown:newparticles,interactionsandphysicsprinciples–  LHCisatthe“EnergyFrontier”andisinthebestpositionto

exploretheunknown!•  Complementarytoe.g.LIGO(anNSFMREFCproject)

–  Thepile-upconditionsareexpectedtobefactorsof5–8timeshigherthanthosepresentlyseenattheLHC.

•  InordertooperateforanadditionaldecadewithinthischallengingphysicalenvironmenttheATLAS&CMSdetectorsrequiresupgradesto:

–  Trackerdetectors,–  Calorimeterdetectorsystems–  Triggeranddataacquisitionsystems

Potential Approach to detector upgrades

•  Option1:TheDOE&NSFworktogetherontheUpgrade–  TheinitialUS-CMSconstructionprojectsandthePhaseIUpgradeProjects

•  WeredoneinapartnershipwithNSF–  Thecostsharingwasapproximately75%HEPand25%NSF

•  Suppliedseveralkeyelementsofthedetector–  TheUSsupplied~25%ofthetotaldetector
