intoBN,inDecember1980,the3100wasBN’snumberassignedforthisGP50.TherestofthedeliverycameonlineinBN’sCascadeGreenschemeandwasinitiallyassignedtoSpringfield,MOastheFriscooriginallyintended.Ashorttimelater,theBNrestenciledtheroadnumberon#3100addingaBNsublettering.Photosshowthat#3100lastedinSLSFliveryinto1985.

PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION: TheEMDGP50isa4-axledieselroadswitcherlocomotivebuiltbyGeneralMotorsElectro-MotiveDivisionbetween1980and1985.Itispoweredbya16-cylinderEMD645F3Bdieselengine,whichcanproducebetween3,500and3,600hp.
Atotalof278examplesofthislocomotivewerebuilt.TheGP50retainsthesameoveralllengthof59feet2inchesastheotherGPdash-2serieslocomotivesbuiltinthesameera.ItutilizedGM’sD87tractionmotorenablingittoproduceacontinuoustractiveeffortof62,400poundsand65,000poundscontinuous.
ThemostsignificantdifferenceintheGP50fromearlierdesignsliketheGP40wasupgradedcomponents(likeaturbochargersilencerandnewtypeofblowerhousing)andincreasedhorsepower.Thelocomotivealsointroducedanew“anti-wheel-slip”technologywherethelocomotivehorsepoweroutputwasreducedifawheelslipconditionwasintroduced.Italsoincludedfeaturesalreadycommononearliermodelssuchasdynamicbraking(asystemfortemporarilyemployingtractionmotorsasgeneratorsandusingtheresultingelectromotiveforcetoslowthetrain),andanairtighthoodthatkeptoutdust,dirtandotherparticlesfromreachinginternalcomponents.
AllthecompaniesthatpurchasedtheGP50havenowbeenabsorbedintoothersystems.However,afewoftheirsuccessorscontinuetooperatetheunits.AnumberGP50shaverebuiltforbetterfueleconomyandcontinueinservicetoday.
