KEY INFORMATION FROM TRAINING DAY
• SME-I is a one shot grant application, with low success rate (10%-15%) and only for SMEs
• SME-I is strongly market oriented; EC is expecting Business oriented project, NOT research projects (TRL 6 minimum)
• The Capability to implement the business plan will be a key point in evaluations
• The SME-I should be Bottom-up, but for next 2 years it will be based on topics.
• Phase 1 activities are a perfect match for Ciaotech/PNO offering

• The SME instrument will cover all fields of science, technology and innovation in a bottom-up approach within a given societal challenge or enabling industrial technology so as to leave sufficient room for all kinds of promising ideas, notably cross-sector and inter-disciplinary projects, to be funded.
• SME Instrument is an integral part of Horizon 2020
and has 7% of the overall budget

PHASE 1 (proof of concept)
• The proposal should contain an initial business plan • Main activities:
– Risk assessment, Market study, User involvement, Intellectual property management, Innovation strategy development, Partner search
• Minimum TRL: – TRL 6 – technology demonstrated in relevant environment, – TRL 7 - Demonstration projects – TRL 8 - upscaling projects – TRL 9 - market replication and introduction
• Pages limit 10 • Project duration 6 months • Lump sum €50000 ( = total eligible cost (direct and indirect) is €
71.249 with co-financing rate of 70%) • Only for SMEs, EC suggests only 1 SME per project • Output elaborated business plan

PHASE 1 (proof of concept)
• This action includes: – deliverables submission – report submission
• 1 reporting period (month 1 to the end) • no periodic report • final report (within 60 days the end of reporting period ) including
– ‘final technical report’ containing a summary with: » an overview of the results; » the conclusions on the action; » the answers to the ‘questionnaire’
– ‘final financial report’ containing an » ‘individual financial statement’ , which includes the request for payment
of the balance
– two payments: • pre-payment at the beginning (within 30 days) – about 70% (TBC) • payment of the balance at the end – 30% (TBC)
• Subcontracting is possible and encouraged

PHASE 2 (development & demonstration)
• The proposal should contain an elaborated business plan with – commercialization plan (initial stage)
• credible path to the market, demonstration of the capacity to go from the demonstration to the production phase
– specification of the outcome of the project – criteria of success
• Main activities – demonstration, testing, prototyping, piloting, scaling up, design, market replication, IP
protection and commercial exploitation, but may also include some research
• Minimum TRL same as in PHASE 1 • Pages limit 30 • Project duration 12-24 months • EU contribution €0.5-2.5mln • Indirect costs are paid as a flat rate and fixed at 25% • Only for SMEs. From 1 to 3/4 SMEs consortium • Output investor-ready business plan

PHASE 3 (go-to-market)
• Proposal should contain an investor- ready business plan • The commercialization phase will be supported indirectly through
simplified access to debt and equity financial instruments as well as various other measures, for example on IPR protection
o Debt finance
Loan finance, i.e. risk-sharing loans to companies and for innovative projects introducing new technologies
Guarantees to financial intermediaries (commercial and development banks) that provide loans to research- and innovation-driven SMEs and small mid-caps
o Equity finance
Equity, i.e. venture capital for newly created companies exploiting R&D results
No direct funding

• Beneficiary of the SME instrument will be offered for free in addition to the grant with:
