if you haven’t got a tolerable

planet to put it on?”

–Henry David Thoreau

was born on July 12, 1817, in Concord, Massachusetts. From 1833 to 1837, he attended Harvard College, and upon graduation, worked as a teacher before becoming a writer. Thanks to Ralph Waldo Emerson, his mentor

and friend, Thoreau grew interested in Transcendentalism, a philosophical

movement that celebrated individuality, self-reliance, and nature. Thoreau explored

these beliefs in his renowned essay collection, Walden. Considered an American classic, Walden recounts Thoreau’s experience living alone in the New England woods. A staunch abolitionist, Thoreau called for resistance against injustice and unfair government

in his 1849 essay, “Civil Disobedience.” Thoreau died in 1862, leaving behind a

vast collection of Transcendentalist writings that are celebrated

to this day.
