my work

What is a core?aka: shared facility, shared resource, or scientific recharge-Scientific group that offers specialized services which are paid for by researchers-cores exists because there is a need for the core’s expertise or instrumentation-like a mini-business

TIPS for How To Successfully Manage a Core Utilizing the LeadMe Leadership Principles

1. Tour the core. Get to know your facility and the entire team.

LeadME Principle: Model the Way.

2. Communicate regularly.Set the tone for engagement early on, establish recurring monthly or quarterly meetings, remind each other about roles and responsibilities and expectations.LeadME Principle: Inspire a Shared Vision.

3. Monitor your monthly revenue versus expenses. Be proactive and revise your service rates if necessary, develop simple rate calculations, create templates as you go.

4. Shares resources with your team and with colleagues. Share files via Dropbox, Google doc, shared drive. Share development and learning opportunities with each other.

5. Develop strong working relationships across your organization. UCSF: RRP, Budget Office, Sponsored Research Office, Accounting, Conflict of Interest, Cancer Center, CTSI (initiate brown bag meeting, recurring focus group meeting).LeadMe Principle: Encourage the Heart
