Human Reaction towards Utilitarianism

Fawad-Ur-Rahman

Utilitarianism

• An ethical philosophy in which the happiness of the greatest number of people in the society is considered the greatest good.

• According to this philosophy, an action is morally right if its consequences lead to happiness (absence of pain), and wrong if it ends in unhappiness (pain).

• According to this theory preferred action are those through which people had more benefits, at low cost to any other alternative action.

• Utility is such an action that benefits to someone.

Utilitarianism Generally

• Utilitarianism is a general term for any view that holds the action/policies that should be evaluated on the basis of benefits and cost, they will impose on society.

• General Concept = NOT Clear

• Certain school of thoughts = In favour

• Certain school of thoughts = NOT In favour

• WHY ? • This might be more simple if we Could answer,

What is Right ??? What is Wrong ???

Point to think ...!

Question: Can we Measure

• Pain

• Humiliation

• Burning sensation

• Feelings or After effects

Regarding to this theory, lets suppose we gave a numerical value to things like that, bring it to the system, and start calculating the COST & BENEFITS, Surely we gonna get more benefits But there is a SCHOOL OF THOUGHT , they think that there are somethings which are not having any numerical value but they dose matter alot.

HUMAN’s REACTION

• Humans are Ration.

• They seek for Profit & Benefit (mostly).

• BUT – Utilitarianism is concerned with "the good of the

whole," "the greatest happiness," and "the ends justifying the means.“

– If you're too concerned about the good of the whole, You neglect the good of the individual (Big mistake)

– As individuals collectively make up the whole. Not to mention that individual capability is a powerful thing
