ICT Coordination and Planning Meeting #1 (17-19 April 2013)

ALMA Dashboard 1.0

Giorgio Filippi 2013-04-17The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international astronomy facility, is a partnership among Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile.

Monitoring & Control• Many areas/systems have already there own monitoring

(and in some cases) control M&C tools, either as configured commercial applications or as ad hoc development

• Some M&C can notify/inform users by means of e-mails, phone, radio, beeping, etc.

• Some M&C have local database for historical data

• There are on going efforts in various areas to complete/upgrade such systems in both performance/functionality and coverage

quite a lot is already there . . .

Despite all these tools is difficult to get the overview of ALMA as a system.

ALMA Observatory as a system What first:

…. start from the most visible element

The antennas

The AOS Status spreadsheetGoogle spreadsheet developed by R. Hill et al. at the beginning of 2012 to keep the overview of the antennas status, originally focusing on the CSV needs and then becoming the “reference” view for operations.

DASHBOARDWEB based prototype implementation of the spreadsheet concept. It may help:• Identifying processes and responsibilities and standardize internal and external

communications• Focusing on priorities• Integrating existing workflows• Providing transparency to EXEC.

DASHBOARD (V1.0) statusDevelopment of the core completed (by INRIA on JAO Contract) and was tested by

users (AIV Coordinators, CSV Scientists, AOG Operators) in real operations since March 25.

Preliminary Acceptance granted on April 02. Application released to user on Apr10.

Completion of a set of minor features (reporting, graphical enhancements, …) for end April/midMay.

Discussion is open on possible follow-ups about:• Access control: who can read/write what? basic mechanism already in place • Level of internal/external visibility of data? basic mechanism already in place • Integration with other applications (JIRA workflow, CMMS, OMC, …. )?

DASHBOARD can also prompt further discussion on organization of operational processes.

Time to formalize operational processes (conceptual example)
