Immigration to America

before the Civil War was

moderate due to the

expense and difficulty of

travel.

During the Civil War there was hardly any Immigration

After the Civil War

ended Immigration picked up again and

many came to America

In the 50 years before before the Civil War about 5 million immigrants came to America

In the 50 years following the War 25 million people

came to America

One of the reasons Immigration picked up is Steam Boats. Passage on one of these boats

across the Atlantic was about $10-$15.

Where The Immigrants Came From

1860-1880 Most of the Immigrants came from Germany,

Great Britain, Iceland and Scandinavia

People from Japan and China begin to Immigrate

conditions were very poor

factories, steel mills and meat packing

plants

Because a lot of Immigrants didn’t know

English

Many of the cities and the infrastructure of American Civilization

(roads, railroads, buildings, water and sewer systems) were

built by Immigrant Labor

The railroad was built mainly by Irish and Chinese Immigrants

Even though life in America was

hard for the Immigrant, It was still usually much better than what they left behind.
