Tasks:

IEO is a governmental research organization devoted to:

• Oceanographic research (including marine pollution,

fisheries and aquaculture).

• Advice the Spanish Government on its oceanographic

and fishery policies.

• Representation of Spain in international

oceanography and fishery organisations.

• Promotion of co-operation in marine research at the

regional, national and international levels.

• Training oceanographers and disseminating

oceanographic knowlegde.

Facilities and personnel:

•Geographic distribution: coastal laboratories and a central

headquarter in Madrid

•Dedicated research facilities: research vessels, aquaculture

plants, tide-gauge network, satellite image reception station

•Personnel: more than 400 permanent staff (plus ca. 200

temporal contracts).
