Abstract:Asmoreagenciesseektoincorporatelong-distancetravelintotheirtravelforecas@ngandperformancemeasuresanalyses,itisbecomingmoreimportanttounderstandintercitymodechoicesandthedes@na@on/modedecision-makingprocess.Thisprojectanalysesthefactorsaffec@ngmodechoiceincludingpar@cipants’propensitytomakebundleddecisionsonmodeanddes@na@on.UsingarandomsampleofVermontresidents,dataonamostrecenttripforpersonalreasonswerecollected.Mostrespondentsindicatedtheymakebundleddecisionsofdes@na@onandmodechoice,withnonotabledifferencesacrosssocioeconomicgroups.Bundledvsunbundleddecision-makingprocesseswassta@s@callysignificantbuthadonlymodestexplanatorypowerinmodechoicemodels.Moreimportant,however,wastheuseofouralterna@vespecifictravelcharacteris@csinsteadofsimpledistanceinmodechoicemodels.Inpar@cular,thera@oofflyinganddriving@mesbetweenspecificoriginsanddes@na@onsisthestrongestpredictorofmodechoice.Thepaperoutlinesaprocessforcollec@ngaverageweightedtravel@mesandcostsbetweenalterna@vesetsoforiginanddes@na@onairportsforeachtripfromtheFAADB1Bdatabaseinordertoincludethesemeasuresinthemodechoicemodels.Resultssupporttheuseofjointdes@na@on-modechoicemodelswithdetailedalterna@vespecificvariablesforlong-distancetraveldemandmodels.
