CapitalismThe mystery of Mistry
Which decision was good?
Whose fault is it?1. Those who selected Cyrus Mistry or the man
himself?2. How is it that someone who was selected
for his ‘strategic vision’, is being penalized for exercising it?
3. If the selection was wrong, who must pay?The beauty of corporate politics…There’s always a fall guy to protect your arse
Basis of dismissal1. Selling ‘crown jewels’?
Colonial hangover apart, since when is selling non-performing assets a crime?
2. Not growing Jaguar/Land Rover Why not blame him also for the severe
recession in Europe which is the real reason for low sales growth?
Cheap politics stinks – Join Tatas for a lifetime career
Confusion Between means and ends
Is there a moral conflict?1. The first value of any commercial enterprise
is to make profit.2. So any decision that makes a loss is a bad
decision and conflicts with the principle value to make profit.
3. A business that doesn't make profit is a charity. It is not a business
Separate profit from its uses
No blanket rule1. Not all capitalism is bad. Not all socialism is
good.2. Only if you make profits can you use them
for good work.3. I am talking about making profits. Not about
how you use them.Today’s problems are not because of profit
But because of how it is made and where it is used
Means and Ends1. The problem with today's capitalism is not in
making profits but in how we make them and what we do with them.
2. The problem is in cornering wealth for the benefit and enjoyment of a few at the cost of the many.
Poverty is a function of distribution, not production
