UNDERSTANDING CALIBAN’S SPEECH – 1/18Directions: Re-read the following speech from the beginning of 2.2. Then, mark-

up the text by completing at least five margin summary notes (label them!) in which you: briefly paraphrase parts of the speech in your own words, ask level one and level two questions, define vocabulary you do not understand, and underline important parts and briefly explain why you chose to underline these parts.

Caliban: All the infections that the sun sucks upFrom bogs, fens, flats, on Prosper fall and make himBy inchmeal a disease! His spirits hear me,And yet I needs must curse. But they’ll nor pinch me I’ th’ mire,Nor lead me like a firebrand in the darkOut of my way, unless he bid ‘em. But For every trifle are they set upon me,Sometimes like apes, that mow and chatter at meAnd after bite me; then like hedgehogs, whichLie tumbling in my barefoot way and mountTheir pricks at my footfall. Sometime am I All wound with adders, who with cloven tonguesDo hiss me into madness. Lo, now, lo! Here comes a spirit of his, and to torment meFor bringing wood in slowly. I’ll fall flat. Perchance he will not mind me.

Caliban was sent to collect wood for Prospero, he was late, and he and Prospero got into an argument. Caliban is searching for firewood for firewood on the island in a deserted area.

Why is this quote important?

This quote is important because it shows conflict between Prospero and Caliban, which influnces the plot.

RUBRIC!! DO NOT USE CONTRACTIONS! Read over rubric!

HOMEWORK Bring in draft of essay to exam. Bring in Review Packet to turn in

If you have not done it; it is better to ‘study’ rather than frantically finish a review packet you are not putting effort in.

This may be what you turn in!! Do not expect to have ANY time to work on it. Look at your Q & A essay 1st draft and final (my

comments and peers’) for areas you need to improve your writing. Take these into considersation.

Look through the “First Draft Instructions Sheet” (second section) for how to improve it.
