Good Evening!

• WELCOME!• Please take your seat and reflect:– What academic progress have your

students made so far this year?– What growth do you hope they will

demonstrate by the end of the year?

Greeting

• Turn to your neighbor and greet them with a bright “Good Evening.”

• Ask your neighbor about his/her hopes for his/her student and share yours!!

Some Fun

• To start our evening off right, we are going to play a little game called…

GUESS WHICH STAFF MEMBER!!!

• This staff member and his/her sister were elected President and Vice President of student government in middle school.

• ANSWER: Ms. Gordon• Their slogan was “Double your

pleasure, double your fun- Vote for the Gordon Sisters – we’re number one!”

• This staff member was the President of the Honor Society at his/her high school.

• ANSWER: Mr. TC• Mr. TC also had the opportunity to

speak as the MC for a meeting with the National Honor Society

• This staff member won a scholarship to a local high school and graduated as the Salutatorian with a 4.2 GPA.

• ANSWER: Mrs. Lee• Mrs. Lee was also nominated

“most talented” by her 8th grade class.

• This staff member was the captain of the rugby team.

• ANSWER: Mr. Webster • Mr. Webster led his team to victory

and they were the New England champions!

• This staff member was a high school cheerleader!

• ANSWER: Ms. Mann• Ms. Mann also got into EVERY

college she applied to!

• This staff member one the Service Award for completing the most service hours in her high school.

• ANSWER: Ms. Alwon• Ms. Alwon also won a scholarship

because of her awesome commitment to service.

High School Application

• The DCPS High School Applications opened this past Monday.

• Go to www.MySchoolDC.org to apply• The DEADLINE is February 3, 2013

Reminders

• *Be sure to include your Student ID - this allows for the automatic transfer of your test scores and transcripts

• *Spend Winter Break working on your high school application essays

• *Make sure you are putting in a valid email address - this is how some high schools will contact you for interviews!

• *Also make sure you are putting in valid email addresses for your recommendations!

Some SPECIAL Points• Most specialized high schools have additional

deadlines for entrance exams, interviews, or auditions. Please see the schools’ profiles for details about these dates! (all information is available on www.MySchoolDC.org)

• Benjamin Banneker, for example:– After submitting their application, qualified

applicants will be asked to interview on one of three dates:• Wednesday, February 19• Wednesday, March 5• Saturday, March 8

Recommendations

• DCPS Recommendations – we can begin recommendations on Dec. 23rd

• Letters of Recommendations Requests – Students must request

recommendations from adults in writing using the recommendation requests form

Essays• Essays are required for HS applications• In order for students to submit the best essays

possible:– Mrs. Lee will host application and essay writing

sessions over the winter break from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM every day except Christmas and New Years. Students must sign up.

– Students can e-mail Mrs. Lee, Ms. Alwon, or Mr. TC to proof their essays.

– Students will have opportunities to work on the application and essays in advisory upon returning from break.
