“It’s A Great Day to Be a Rampant!! “
These were the words uttered to me by a teacher just a day ago as we passed one another in the
halls of Rose High. This comment is one we often share and the sentiment remains the same at this
busy time of the year.
This time of year is filled with much activity so we can ensure a successful end while preparing
for the new beginning. With exam review in full swing and graduation preparation before us, stu-
dents are still actively participating in various events throughout the school.
Just in the last few weeks, students have participated in competitions and other activities. Stu-
dents competed in the state level History Day competition with two submissions advancing to na-
tionals. During the same weekend, Rose had students medal in three events at the Science Olympi-
ad State Competition.
Recent events in the Arts department included the spring concerts for orchestra and chorus,
while the theatre department had its musical production of Willy Wonka. The band also hosted the
North Carolina Jazz Regionals for the East. Earlier in the month, a J.H. Rose band student earned a
seat in the state's honors band and participated in a clinic. The student had the opportunity to per-
form with the All-State Honors Band in a concert on the final day at Aycock Auditorium at the Uni-
versity of North Carolina at Greensboro. Several chorus students also participated in the All-State
Chorus performance.
Rose hosted the Special Olympic Games of Pitt County with many of our students participating
and Dream Team members playing an integral role in assisting. The J.H. Rose Relay for Life team
had another successful year. And, our Student Government Association hosted a safe and enjoya-
ble prom.
The next few weeks will include more spring performances including the band and dance ensem-
ble. The 3rd annual Rose Garden Fashion Show will be held to support the prevention of domestic
violence. Then we will celebrate academic accomplishments at our Annual Awards Day Ceremony.
The events and competitions I have shared throughout this year would not be possible without
the generous contributions of our parents and community partners that join our students and
staff in their endeavors. On behalf of Rose faculty and staff, I would like to thank each of you who
have volunteered, donated time and resources or took the time to give that encouraging message
to one of our students. The multitude of support and effort from everyone allows us to continue to
offer our students a myriad of opportunities. Our students have grown academically, socially and
emotionally. Your dedication and commitment to our school is greatly appreciated...
you help make everyday a great day to be a Rampant.
For your reflection:
You gave me your time, the most thoughtful gift of all.

This month we break with tradition of recognizing a faculty or staff member to honor
one of our own with the Rampant Spirit Award: Mary Naziri. Mary has served on the Advisory Council since 2007, and as its
President from 2010 to the present. During those years she has worked tirelessly to support the students, faculty and
administration of J.H. Rose.
In particular Mary has worked to build comaraderie among the many parent booster organizations at Rose, coordinate their ef-
forts and improve communication to parents. Rampant Wear has become an integral part of school spirit and sales continue to
grow. Mary instituted this Rampant Spirit Award and under her leadership the Advisory Council has taken a more active role in providing parent input to administration regarding all aspects of
student life.
We reluctantly will say goodbye to Mary’s leadership at the end of the school year when her youngest child graduates. In addition to her son Wade who will be attending NC State next year, the three older Nazari children are proud alumni of
Rose High School. Ryan just graduated this spring from UNC Chapel Hill in Economics, Katie is a senior at the College of Charleston, and Erin who graduated from Rose last
year, has just completed her freshman year, also at UNC Chapel Hill.
Mary won’t be slowing down any time soon. She has completed her recertification as a
registered nurse and is looking to return to surgical nursing. But for all her many ac-
complishments, Mary cherishes that her children say she is “the best mom ever.”
Our sincere gratitude and best wishes go with Mary!

Rose Chorus The JH Rose Orchestra performed its Spring Orchestra
Concert on May 15 at Fletcher Hall at the ECU School of
Music. The concert featured guest artists/Rose Orchestra

Seven graduating seniors were honored for their accom-
plishments during their years in Rose Orchestra. Several
seniors will also be receiving the Tri-M National Music Hon-
or Society Award at the Tri-M Music Society Spring Cham-
ber Music Concert on June 2 in the PAC.

...an email to the Rose Lacrosse coach
from the coach of an opponent:
I want to take a moment to applaud your
team’s sportsmanship. We’ve experienced
all kinds in this conference and your team
is the class of the league. We have a cul-
ture of chippiness at FFHS, in many sports,
and we often react negatively when our
opponents get mouthy. Your team was
extremely classy and our players never felt
like they had to defend their honor, so to
speak. It’s obvious you have a strong
culture of sportsmanship there and it
probably starts at the top. We will continue
to strive to be more honorable as competi-
tors and I hope the culture you’re fostering
at JH Rose thrives.
Best wishes,
John Van Lunen, First Flight High School

One of the many ways the generosity of
Academic Boosters makes a difference in
Rose classrooms...
“My ESL (English as Second Language)
class received a grant from Academic
Boosters for a subscription to BrainPOP,
which contains lots of animations about a
variety of content topics. The two photos
show teams of students viewing videos as
part of their research on Thomas Jefferson
and George Washington. BrainPOP
really helped them answer their research
questions about each person.
We really appreciate having access to
this resource.”
