THE PROGRAM / 02
Just Like Me? is a global education program, developed specifically for
Australian primary schools. Designed by teachers, the program aims to inform students about children, just like them,
living in poor communities overseas.
Students are involved in a workshop that is based on real life stories of children in developing countries. They participate in
both whole group discussions and outdoor simulation activities.
Within a presentation and discussion format students are asked to consider similarities and differences between themselves and their peers in developing countries. The emphasis depends on the age
and stage of the students and is tailored to fit the learning program of the individual school. Topics can include:
WHAT IS
• Home life and school life • The use of water • Needs and wants
• Rights of the child • Responsibilities of the global citizen • Sustainable Development Goals

• Daily chores such as: - sweeping - washing dishes - washing clothes - carrying water
• School comparison activity
• Culture specific games
• Longer tailored activities

The discussions are followed by a series of hands -on simulation activities based on the real life of the child already discussed to
promote a deeper understanding of poverty. These activities include:

‘cause and effect’ posters. There were rich discussions where the children made some interesting discoveries and realisations.”

• Run for approximately 90 minutes • Delivered by a registered teacher • Run in your own school • Fully supports your learning program • Reinforces the Australian Curriculum including Geography, and Civics and Citizenship • The program is supported by online resources, at no extra cost

In response to the impact of Just Like Me?, International Needs Australia developed the Just One Day campaign. Just One Day is a campaign which challenges primary school students and their families to live simply for Just One Day, learn about global poverty, and fundraise to keep poor kids in developing countries in school. Schools who participate in Just One Day are eligible to receive Just Like Me? workshops free of charge (conditions apply).
Please note: Other schools not involved in Just One Day are welcome to book workshops for a nominal fee. Each workshop caters for a maximum of 60 students. Please send your enquiry through www.justlikeme.org.au.
