We are having admission degree cere-
monies in February, April, and June. Set
a goal to be a sponsor of candidates for
these ceremonies. Talk to friends at your
church.
I hope to see or hear from you sometime
soon.

Grand Knight
I hope you were blessed with a Merry
Christmas and all is well in your families.
Now, it is time to be looking ahead to our
activities of the New Year 2013.
Plan to be involved in the business
meetings, lecturer presentations, and the
scheduled program events. Be involved
and better appreciate and understand the
unity and fraternalism of the Knights of
Columbus.
We will soon be nominating and elect-
ing new officers and committee members
for the 2013-2014 year. Consider and
indicate how you can best serve in the
organization. We especially welcome and
urge our newer members to be active and
involved. Speak to another member and
consider how you can participate. Thank
you to all who have served in the many
ways this past year.

anniversary party memorable at the club.
Don’t forget our fish fries this Lent.
Gambling meetings conflict with my
work schedule, so I’m uninformed. As of
this writing, the two current iPulltab ven-
dors are not compelling. See Scott if
you’d play, so he can gauge interest.
Wednesday bar bingo is a blast too.
I know some of you haven’t been asked
to join our activities. We’ve tried to call
every member, and we don’t have every-
one’s email. Tootsie Rolls, softball and
vocations dinner are nigh. Let’s get you
involved. Drop me a line.
One of our most underused member
benefits is student loans. Let Brad Riebel
help your kids pay for college.
Regular volunteers for Saturday Mass at
the Veterans Home include Fr. Fier, Joe
Novak, Tom Steigauf, Morrie Devitt, Jul-
ian Hynnek, Bill Jaspers, Phil Cummings
and Doug Konietzko. Thanks guys, for
enduring my piano music.
Who’s going to heaven? Gene Drabek
and Jim Haeg have practically rebuilt the
Poor Clare monastery in recent years.
New helpers needed. The nuns can put in
a good word for you.
God bless Orv Fillbrandt. I’ve worked
with District Deputies around the state.
But Orv’s a star and our top recruiter this
year. Chancellor Pete Tartaro scheduled
Admission Degrees all spring – let’s in-
duct YOUR candidate.
Now that elections are past, I hope we
can resume polite conversation with
friends and neighbors. In this Year of
Faith, we are called to inform and educate
others. Our pro-life efforts have surged,
thanks to Pat Rickert and team.
Brothers and Ladies, thanks for all the
time you give in service to our council,
Church and community. You set an ex-
ample.

Deputy Grand Knight’s Message
Time flies. Our busiest season nears.
Glad to have you aboard.
Thanks to Flynn's, Williams's and
Burn’s, and our staff Jimmy, Brenna, Jim
and Lisa for great Christmas and New
Year’s events.
Marketers include Rita Peller, Jason
Touw, Bill Jaspers and Jim Breitfeller. I
think we have the Order’s best website.
Eye-catching banners start dialogue at
parish and youth events.
More visibility from our youth Soccer
Challenge and Free Throw. Both were led
with aplomb this year by warden Rodney
Tholen. Thanks too, volunteers.
The Home Association continues im-
proving our hall. Greg Bruns cut utility
bills 10%. Tom Mantel, Tom Steigauf
and team plan restroom remodeling. Your
donation pays when you bring your wife
to the club. You love her that much…

events to get you out of the house between
now and May 1? Consider what's happen-
ing at the KC Hall:
We recently introduced a new more
health-conscience dinner menu. Stop
by and give it a try.
Lent starts with Ash Wednesday on
February 13. Rather than the normal
chicken and ribs, we will serve all-
you-can-eat fish that evening. Lenten
Fridays also feature our fabulous all-
you-can-eat fish fry. Reservations
are highly recommended.

Sunday, March 17, we're offering a
special dinner menu in the lounge on
Saturday, March 16. Again, reserva-

Fridays – February 15, March 15 and
April 12. Have dinner in the lounge
beforehand and save $2 per person
toward admission to the dance.
Trivia Night, a fund raiser for the 3rd
Degree, will be Friday, April 19.

site for more details
The last Friday of every month,
through May, there's wrestling in the
Grand Hall. At $12 per adult and $6
per kid, it's inexpensive entertainment
for all. You never know who you
will see in the ring!
Remember the lounge is open for dinner
Wednesday through Saturday evenings
from 5:00 – 8:30 and the bar is open Mon-
day through Saturdays evenings starting at
4:30.
Looking forward to seeing you around
the hall.

Happy New Year! As a Knight, we all
believe that our purpose on earth is to
serve our church and our fellow man. We
do this tirelessly, and without much hesi-
tation. Most of us take a few moments at
the start of the new year to take inventory
and make promises for an even better
hear?
So, have you made your New Year’s
resolutions yet? Perhaps some have re-
solved to lose a couple of those holiday
pounds, or to read a few more books, or to
pay better attention to Father on Sundays
rather than drift off to daydream. Myself,
I not only committed myself to doing all
of those things but I've committed to do-
ing all I can to find more me. So believe
in what we believe. Over the next several
months the Knights of Columbus will be
coming perhaps to your parish in search
of more gentlemen like yourself, who are
looking to serve.
Would you be willing to introduce them
to us? I believe that we are truly a re-
markable group and that we need to share.
We are finalizing our membership drive
schedule for the first half of 2013 and
soon you'll start to see our advertising in
your parish for membership events.
Please stop by our booth or table and
bring somebody that you feel would make
a terrific Knight to follow in Christopher
Columbus's footsteps.

on Feb 13th --- 40 days to prepare for
the celebration of the Easter Triduum
on March 28th-31st; and then, we will
rejoice for the 50 days of the Easter
season culminating in the commemo-
ration of the birthday of the Church
with the Feast of Pentecost on May
19th.
Yes, the Church is providing many op-
portunities for us to “rediscover” our
Catholic faith. I truly hope that as
Knights of Columbus we will step for-
ward and lead this much needed effort.
Remember, we are always to be people of
great faith, hope and love, especially in
these difficult times. May God bless our
good work!

Chaplain’s Message
Dear Fellow Knights:
A few months have passed since we
began the “Year of Faith” proclaimed by
our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI.
How are we doing in responding to this
invitation to do a “pulse check” of our
faith? On the Archdiocesan level, Arch-
bishop John Nienstedt responded by initi-
ating the “Rediscover Program” --- a won-
derful opportunity to rediscover our Cath-
olic faith. I hope everyone has become
involved in this program. As Knights we
should be role models for our parishes.
Consider some specific opportunities:
1. Go to the website Rediscover-
faith.org to learn more;
2. Pick up and read Matthew Kelly’s
“Rediscover Catholicism --- A Spir-
itual Guide To Living With Passion
& Purpose” (parishes received free
copies of this book to distribute at
Christmas; thus, check with your par-
ish);
3. Join one of the book study groups
sponsored by your parish;
4. Participate in the “2013 Speaker Se-
ries” --- throughout February and
March each vicariate will host a se-
ries of four evenings of insightful
talks “to help unpack the big ideas
central to the Catholic faith and, most
importantly, show us how they lead
to a deeper, more meaningful connec-
tion with God in our lives” --- check
with the website or your parish for
specific locations and dates; and,
5. Check out the many offerings your
parish has for the coming year. For
example, we are about to enter the
Lenten journey --- Ash Wednesday is
As we move into calendar 2013, I am
pleased to say that we continue to have
the top leadership from the key Pro-Life
Ministries in the Twin Cities update us
through their presentations on the exciting
developments in their organizations.
Our February meeting will be held on
Monday, the 25th, and will feature Mary
Ball, Executive Director of Holy Family
Catholic Adoption Center. She will show
that adoption is not only the loving an-
swer to abortion to the mother bearing the
child, but provides the childless couple a
rewarding solution to have the child enter
into their wholesome caring Catholic
home, a win win for all parties involved.
We will be bringing back Peg Benicke,
Executive Director for Robbinsdale Wom-
en’s Center for our March 11th meeting
and she will be providing us with all the
enthusiasm that was created from their
just concluded Annual Fundraising Dinner
and the fact that they are celebrating 20
years of providing Pro-Life services. Peg
also will be showing us, weather permit-
ting, RWC’s Mobile Image Clear Ultra-
sound RV unit.
On April 1st, Mary Kellett, Executive
Director of Prenatal Partners for Life has
quite a few areas that are in the works to
strengthen her ministry that she will be
telling us about, such as, a new brochure
and poster for doctors’ offices , plus she is
printing another book and teaching
DVD’s. Her program was recently hon-
ored to be one of the Champion for Life
award winners by the Archdiocese.
All of these programs will be held in the
Madonna Room and will start with the
Rosary at 7:30 PM. We hope you will
support these speakers and their very
worthwhile ministries by your attendance.

The new Menu is here! After several
months of working with our Club Man-
agement staff, our Food Service vendors,
“Do-Town” representatives and our
Bloomington Public Health Department,
we are up and running as of Wednesday,
January 16, 2013. We have made adjust-
ments to our menu that we hope you all
enjoy. This is the first step to upgrade our
dining choices to you, our customers. We
are offering you more choices of small or
regular size portions of some dishes,
along with new and changing menu items
One of the next changes you will see is
a wine list. Along with wine by the glass,
we will be offering you a limited selection
of bottled wines, both red and white. Our
target is to have this available by Wednes-
day, February 6, 2013. We believe this
will compliment your dining experience.
In the March timeframe we will conduct
a Diner’s Survey to get your feedback on
our new menu, quality of the food being
served, wine list concept, and our selec-
tions and dining room and lounge ser-
vices. We look forward to your com-
ments and recommendations.
We’ve included a copy of the new menu
as part of this Newsletter. We hope to see
you in the dining room soon.

I am pleased to report that during the
past quarter our physical plant and facility
have operated without the need for major
repairs or replacement. There are proba-
bly two main reasons for our good for-
tune. One is luck and the other is the ef-
forts of our volunteer maintenance team
headed by Board Member Julian Hynnek.
Julian leads a group of dedicated volun-
teers that is able to maintain just about
everything in our facility. Their services
run the gamut from fixing squeaking
doors to replacing the heater element in
the popcorn machine. Their effort saves
us money and keeps everything operating
so we may enjoy our hall.
Last newsletter I shared two major pro-
jects we are managing. One is the Re-
stroom upgrade the other is the installa-
tion of the flashing warning lights across
American Blvd. The Restroom construc-
tion taskforce has been working hard on
the planning stages of the project. Archi-
tectural proposals have been solicited and
reviewed, builders have been contacted
and representatives of the taskforce have
met with the city to define the scope. The
taskforce now will finalize the work plan
and begin the scheduling process. Recon-
struction should start in the next month or
so. A subcommittee has been established
to help raise funding for this project. As
our past Chaplain, Father Bernie used to
say “there is bad news and good news”.
The bad news is that the project will cost
between eighty and one hundred thousand
dollars, the good news is we have the
money; it is in your pockets…. This siza-
ble expenditure will give all our members
the opportunity to generously lend their
support. If each member was able to sup-
port the project in an equitable amount the
cost would be about $100.00 each. Since
we know some are not in the position to
offer support it will be important that each
that can, donate our fair share and a little
more to help those that cannot. Be gener-
ous when you receive the invitation to
support this project.
The other major project we are manag-
ing is the installation of the flashing warn-
ing lights across American Blvd. We
shared in the last Knight News that we
were moving forward with support from
the city. We had hoped that the project
would have been completed by now. At
the beginning of November we gained
approval from all appropriate boards to
move forward. At that time we contacted
the city and were led to believe that the
project would begin. Some ten weeks
later we still have seen no movement on
the part of the city. This is a little frus-
trating as the city has been very good to
work with in the past. We have been fo-
cusing our contact with the city employee
coordinating the project and probably
need to review the lack of progress with
our City Manager. We would really like
to see the project completed as soon as
possible. The danger presented by the
uncontrolled crosswalk is heightened with
winter conditions. How do you get a city
project built in six months?…start with a
two week project.
I know it is a little ways off but June
will be here before you know it and elec-
tions for our Board will be held. We have
a great working group on the Home Asso-
ciation Board. I understand one or two of
the incumbent directors may not be seek-
ing re-election. This presents a great op-
portunity for you to consider serving. If
you have time and interest in this activity
please contact anyone of the present
Board Members and they can share infor-
mation on our responsibilities and answer
your questions.

Pancake and French Toast Breakfast
There will be a breakfast on Sunday, February 17th in the lounge beginning at 8:30 to 12:30. This is to benefit the
council and it is a free will offering. This breakfast will be hosted by members of St. Richard, Visitation, Christ
the King and Annunciation parishes. If you are a member of those parishes, please contact Keith Rauen (952-
881-2805) or Mike Salvatore (612-703-0731) to help work. They would appreciate the calls.

We ended 2012 with a successful Silent
Auction for our Annual Charitable Fund-
raiser, chaired again by Beth Williams
and with her helper elves. Over $2,700.00
was raised through the two wine raffles
and from the purchase of the many attrac-
tive auction items. Thank you to Beth and
your committee for all who donated, pur-
chased and attended the Adult Christmas
Party. We also want to reflect back to
November’s Spaghetti Dinner and the
efforts made by chair Jean Ralph and her
committee members. This event netted
over $800.00 to add to our Auxiliary cof-
fers.
A special hello to all for year 2013. The
year has started in a difficult way. Let's
remain strong and active in our programs
for the rest of the year. Be involved and
spread the word of membership to your
friends. Thank you for your personal sup-
port, prayers, and encouragement. I hope
to see you soon.

Lecturer Program
Our Lecturers program on Thursday, March
28, 2013 will be David Jones, a native of St.
Peter and a resident of Minneapolis, who has
been presenting three historical topics (JFK
Assassination, Lincoln Assassination and
Apollo Moon Missions) to a range of audienc-
es for the past 16 years. He has made more
than 250 presentations to over 7,000 people.
His presentation to Marian Council will be
"JFK Assassination: The Mystery & Legend".
Even though the Warren Commission found
that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, more
than 70% of Americans today believe there
was a conspiracy. Why is that? What are the
pieces of evidence that are in dispute? This
presentation covers the basics of the assassina-
tion, the trip to Dallas, the conclusions of the
Warren Commission and the ongoing de-
bate. Whereas many presenters on the JFK
Assassination attempt to convince the audience
of a particular viewpoint, this presentation
shows the many sides of the discussion and
allows audience members to decide for them-
selves. Where were you when JFK was assas-
sinated? Nearly 50 years later, this event still
sparks discussion and controversy. Join us for
a balanced discussion of one of the pivotal
events of the 20th century.
Our Lecturers program on Thursday, April
25, 2012 will be Richard McGuire and Kevin
Curry of Catholic Tutor Corps. Richard
Our Lecturers program on Thursday, Febru-
ary 28, 2013 will be John DeLozier, a Semi-
narian at the University of St. Thomas and St.
John Vianney Seminary. John is the youngest
of three children and was baptized at St. Vin-
cent De Paul Catholic Church in Brooklyn
Park, MN. His family moved to St. Michael,
MN before he started grade school and he
attended St. Michael Catholic School from
Kindergarten through 6th grade. After that
John attended St. Michael-Albertville Public
School through graduation. It was during his
middle school and high school years that he
started making his faith his own and got in-
volved in his parish youth group. John first
visited St. John Vianney Seminary during his
junior year of high school and while he was
very impressed by the visit and the example of
the men there, he didn't think seminary was for
him. After graduation he served as a mission-
ary for a year with NET ministries, traveling
around the country to a different city almost
every day doing retreats for middle school and
high school youth. It was during this time that
John realized that the deepest desire of his
heart was to bring people to Christ and that
God was calling him to enter seminary and
discern the priesthood. He entered the next
fall, and he is now in his sophomore year stud-
ying philosophy at the University of St. Thom-
as and St. John Vianney Seminary.
McGuire was the organizer of the Catholic
Tutor Corps 11 years ago and is currently an
attorney working in the railroad industry. He
has tutored at many of the schools where they
are represented. Kevin Curry, employed with
3M for nearly 40 years, currently tutors three
days a week at Blessed Trinity School in Rich-
field. Kevin was named Volunteer of the Year
at Blessed Trinity in December of this
year. Kevin was on the Steering Committee of
the CTC for over 2 years. Their presentation
will provide a brief history of the Catholic
Tutor Corps including organizational structure,
growth in tutors, and schools where they are
currently active and have tutored in the past.
Information to include grade levels and sub-
jects for tutors, experiences of the tutors gen-
erally and a few specifics, why be a tutor?
Also recruiting of parishes and universities, as
well as time for questions.
The Lecturers program will be after our
short meeting, approximately 8:00 p.m. Mem-
bers, spouses and/or significant others and
guests are welcome for our Lecturers pro-
grams. After our program we will go upstairs
to the lounge for socializing, treats and re-
freshments. Orville Fillbrandt
