At the state gambling expo, I learned there are two types of bingo/pulltab chari-ties. Most do little promotion. Those that do, prosper. Scott Marette launched an email campaign and is studying AdWords. We are adding market share. You may not gamble, but you know folks who do. Introduce them to our club. In 2012, Minnesota Knights donated $2.9 million and 1.7 million volunteer hours. Our council was a disproportionate share of that. With your help, we’ll do even more. Tell me you’ve paid your 2014 member dues? If you have an idea for a new activity, email me [email protected]. Support our priests. DEFEND LIFE!

Mike Gigot Grand Knight

Prospero Año! Hopefully your 2014 resolutions involve charity, the crux of Knighthood. Maybe more volunteering? Boost your stewardship, support Catholic schools. Knights should set a high stand-ard. This means you. Our recent pro-grams included soccer, Special Olympics, and Networking for a Cause. We reboot-ed our lecture series with stellar speakers. Attendance surged at our Christmas par-ties. As you read this, we’ll finish our basketball events. Got neighbors who read only bad news about our Church? Bring them to our vocations dinner or a Respect Life event. Ask them to help with Tootsie Rolls. Show them the good we do! I talk a lot about marketing to youth. They use social media. That’s where we gotta be. We do so much for the commu-nity. We just have to say it. We’re mak-

ing progress. kofcbloomington.com keeps winning accolades. We’ve recruited new members from Facebook -- they saw our pics and joined. Are you receiving our weekly eNews? If you don’t have email, ask a friend to print it (email [email protected] to subscribe). It won’t replace this Knight News; it’s just a brief link to events. Chef Brenna often pictures her latest culinary master-piece. Dining room sales are up, so make reservations. Since moving our calendar to kofcbloomington.com, I’ve found that some programs haven’t had an “owner” for years. Dances and pancake breakfasts weren’t advertised; no wonder attendance slumped! We’re fixing that. Thanks, pro-gram chairs, for adapting to boost partici-pation.

Grand Knights Message

Do you have cabin fever after our cold January? Are you looking for events that will get you out of the house? Check out the following: x Super Bowl XLVIII, Sunday, Feb. 2 -

- gather your friends and watch the game at the KCs. With three TVs in the lounge, you’ll catch all the action.

x Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14 – there will be a special dinner menu in the lounge. Check either the Knight News or the website for the menu.

x Vocation Spaghetti Dinner, Saturday, March 1 – plan to support this worthy event and enjoy a dinner served by our seminarians.

x Lent starts with Ash Wednesday on March 5. Rather than the normal

Manager’s Message chicken and ribs, we will serve all-you-can-eat fish that evening. Lenten Fridays also feature our fabulous all-you can-eat fish fry. Reservations are highly recommended.

x Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 15 with the special dinner menu of-fered in the lounge. Again, reserva-tions are recommended.

x Big Band dances on the following Fridays – Feb. 14, March 14 and April 11. Have dinner in the lounge beforehand and save $2 per person toward admission to the dance. Dancing is great exercise and a won-derful way to burn off any extra calo-ries from one of Brenna’s scrump-tious desserts.

x Prime Time Wrestling on Feb. 28, March 28 and April 25 (all Fridays). At just $12 per adult and $6 per child, it’s a great way to spend time with your extended family.

If none of these strike your fancy, why not stop by and try out the new menu we introduced in January. The lounge is open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday evenings from 5:00 – 8:30 and the bar is open Monday through Saturday evenings starting at 4:30. Wishing everyone a Happy Easter!

Jim Rasmussen Manager

Dear Fellow Knights: We find ourselves in the midst of a brief period of Ordinary Time (OT). It seems like quite some time ago that we were celebrating the Advent/Christmas season, and soon we will be entering the Lent/Easter season (FYI --- Ash Wednesday falls on March 5th this year). Before we simply move on from one great season to another, how are we to understand this short venture in to OT? First, what is OT? The Church tells us --- “Besides the times of year that have their own distinctive character, there re-mains in the yearly cycle thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrat-ed, but rather the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its fullness, especially on Sundays. This period is known as Ordi-nary Time” (Universal Norms, 43). Next, how are we called to honor the mystery of Christ? Our natural tendency

is to focus on particular aspects of His life --- birth, teachings, miracles, passion, death, resurrection, etc. --- and yet, during OT we are called to step back from this practice and strive to celebrate the “fullness” of His existence. Perhaps a way to understand this is to consider those moments when we find ourselves “stopping and smelling the roses” of our life. We all have had them; for example, the birth of a child, the death of a loved one, a health crisis, etc. We find our-selves wanting to proclaim to the world to stop and appreciate the blessings we each have been given. The question is --- why do we wait for such key “life moments” to appreciate the overall life we have re-ceived? Why not celebrate these bless-ings throughout our journey? We know we should do so, and yet, the busyness of life often gets in the way of our apprecia-tion.

This is what OT is all about. We are invited to celebrate the great gift we have been given in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. In each day and in each event of our life, we are to acknowledge the won-derful blessing of our Christian faith. This type of focus takes a lot of practice and effort; and yet, if we truly want to be Christ-centered, then our faith should be at the forefront of all that we do and are. There should be no need for any distinc-tive seasons or special feasts; rather, we are to live in a constant state of celebra-tion of our faith. WOW! In many ways, OT is the most important season of the entire year. May God bless us as we strive to live our faith 24/7. Truly this is what it means to celebrate OT. Ordinary Time blessings,

Fr. Brian Fier Chaplain

Chaplain

During a blizzard, a frantic woman call the local hospital and said, “I’ve run out of birth control pills and can’t get to the drugstore. What are the substitutes?” Replied the physician on duty, “Abstinence, Madam.”

* * * * * An old Indian chief had three sons. Winter was approaching and the tribe needed food and supplies. He summoned the boys to his tent, and told them to go in quest of provisions. He said, “Broken Arroe, you head northeast; Running Deer, you go southwest, and Fallen Rock, you go in many directions.” Several moons went by, and Broken Arrow returned with lots of meat. Running Deer returned soon after with much clothing and other supplies. The other brother, legend has it, never returned. He has not been found to this day, but they still search for him. That is why, wherever one travels, you still see signs that say, “Watch our for Fallen Rock.”

* * * * An intrepid inventor crossed a homing pigeon with a suitcase, and got a piece of luggage that will come back to you no matter where the airline loses it.

As we move into calendar year 2014, we will be fortunate to experience what we have in past years by being able to have the top leadership from the key Pro-Life ministries in the Twin Cities update us on the exciting developments in their organizations. Our Monday, February 24th meeting will feature Mary Kellet, Executive Direc-tor and Co-Founder of Prenatal Partners for Life. Mary will bring us up to date on the further expansion of this ministry ded-icated to providing support information and encouragement for expectant or new parents that have a child that has an ad-verse prenatal diagnosis or are raising a child with special needs after birth. She

will discuss the new audio/visual aids that are bringing the program further into the international scope. For our Monday, March 3rd meeting, we will have Kimberly Rynders, Executive Director of Tapestry Pregnancy and Fami-ly Resource Center outline the success that her multiple services center has had this past year with their clients and how we may participate in their upcoming events. On Monday, April 7th we will bring back Brian Gibson, Executive Director of Pro-Life Action Ministries for what has become his annual program that just pre-cedes their Good Friday Prayer Vigil, which will be all day on April 18th from

8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. outside at the Mega-Planned Parenthood Abortuary. Brian will let know how we can be part of that service or actually consider partici-pating with him as a sidewalk counselor or a prayer partner sometime during the balance of the year. All of these programs will be held in the Madonna Room and will start with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m.. We hope you will support these outstanding speakers and their very worthwhile Pro-life ministries with your attendance.

We the Knights of Columbus 3827 have been concerned to be an important part in the society. By promoting youth activities like the Soccer Challenge and the Free Throw Championship, we encourage our children to be involved on some activities and keep a nice fellowship within the community. During the year of 2013, we led the Soccer Challenge. Working together with the Richfield Soccer Association, who gave us a date an facilities for it on August 25th at Donaldson Park and the Bloomington Athletic Association, who gave two dates and a big support at

Kennedy High School Soccer Field on September 3rd and 4th. We realized these contests where boys and girls demonstrated a great interest and made of these events something unique and unforgettable for their parents, voluntaries and spectators. The Soccer District contest was placed on September 14 at Gene Kelly Soccer Field in Bloomington where we got 4 winners and 2 runners-up to the State championship. Three girls 10, 11, and 14 years old one boy 11years old and two boys 12 years old. The first Free Throw date was at Jefferson High School Activities bldg. in

Bloomington on December 14th where 32 girls showed a good interest and performed their abilities in basketball. They did a wonderful job. This is something motivational to our fraternity. We are grateful to BAA and proud to partner with therm. Also thanks to the Richfield Soccer Association.

2014 is here ready or not. Weather is another story. The Silent Auction in De-cember was great. Lots of people to bid. We will not have a meeting in April because of Holy Week. Our next meeting is February 20th. We will have fun with Thea Gullekson. She talks about First

Ladies that have been in the White House. For our meeting, she will talk on Catholic First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Let’s have some fun and all wear your pill box hats. Joy of Giving is personal hygiene for Cor-ner Stone. The agenda for the meeting on March

20th is to be determined. Joy of Giving will be baby items for Tapestry. In April, have a very Holy Week. Pray for our Ladies who need your prayers. God Bless you all.

Once again the Ladies Auxiliary Silent Auction is history. As you all know, this is our charity fundraising event of the year and it takes a lot of effort to accomplish. When I asked many of you for assistance, you stepped forward with your time, treasures and talents to make it a success.

Some took letters to area businesses seek-ing prizes while others donated items they had made or purchased. Still others vol-unteered their time that evening to make it all happen. Everything was very much appreciated; for without your efforts it would not have been such a success. We

made a total of $4,000 which will go to local charities. This is more than we have ever made in the past. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Different life stages, changing needs Paying for college for your children may be one of your family’s current needs. You may be concerned about a comfortable, worry-free retirement. You may wonder if needing costly long-term care will deplete your hard-earned assets. You want to have something to leave for your wife, children or grandchildren. At some point you may have had all of these needs on your mind. Over time, these thoughts make way for others as your needs evolve, your finances change and you get older. What is important to you at age 20, may not be at 30, or 45, or

65. What is the best way to be prepared for these changes before they happen? One of the easiest ways to be financially ready for changes that come with different life stages is to meet annually with your professional Knights of Columbus agent, and address the needs that his analysis uncovers. This can help you be ready to face the financial challenges and issues on the road ahead. During that annual visit, I’ll take the time to review your needs, goals and budget. I’ll update all beneficiaries on your policies and be sure your coverage

meets your needs. I’ll recommend a program of life insurance, long-term care insurance and guaranteed income annuities that will help you rest easy at night. Whatever your needs, whatever your concerns, whatever your stage in life, I can help. I’m at 612 743 8926 or [email protected]. Call me – let’s talk. God Bless

Home Association your own home and we could use people like you to join us once in awhile. We should also take a look at the mem-bers who are active participants at the Hall and take a page out of their play-books. Not only do they come forward by supporting the dining room, our Council and Assembly's parties and dinners, but they come up to help with setup and cleanup afterwards. In the past year we have hired contrac-tors to do work on the bathrooms and they turned out wonderful, don't you agree? We still have need for more funding so if you can help please call the Hall at 952-888-1492 and help out if you can.

As we close 2013 and welcome in the new year let's make a New Year's resolu-tion of supporting our KC Hall. It's not hard and our hall has many venues that could be used by all of our members. The US government has their Seal Teams that they can call on for problems, but we have very generous "Brother Knights and Ladies" that come to support our Hall. When there is work to be done, the troops come in and when the work is completed, you may never know that there was ever a problem. We appreciate all of their work that they do for us and the hall. You may enjoy working around

Now that the bathrooms are completed and they do look sharp let's look at the future and see what the next project should be. The Grand Ballroom was built in 1955 and had a makeover in 1976. Twenty more years have gone by and an-other fourteen years have gone by. It’s time to look at changing the decor to draw in more business. Let's work on this to-gether to make our club house the best profitable Knights of Columbus Hall in Minnesota.
