1) Some commercial cleaning agents contain acids and alkalis in concentrations stronger than those shown in Group 3, and can cause surface marking or damage. Any spillage of such materials must be washed offimmediately.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE a. As compact panels are made of
approximately 70% kraft paper, it issomehow similar to wood behaviour.Therefore Laminex MultipurposeCompact Laminate will be affectedby moisture.
The effect of the surroundingtemperature will not affect theexpansion and contraction of thepanels but it will be influenced by themoisture content within theenvironment.
Hence if the temperature andrelative humidity is high in theenvironment, it will speed up theexpansion process and the oppositewill cause contraction in the panels.
Usually thinner panels will expandfaster than thicker panels as moisturepenetration is faster for thinner panelsin high moisture content environment.
Maximum expansion or contractionof Compact Laminate panels isapproximately 2.5mm/m in lengthand it is not dependable on the
panel thickness, hence always leave asufficient gap between the twoadjoining panels and near the edgesof the walls as shown below.
Compact panel equilibrium conditionis usually at 25 ˚C with relativehumidity of about 50%.
b. When subjected to moisture,compact panels will expand more inthe cross sectional direction than thelongitudinal direction. The ratio ofexpansion rate is about 1:2. Thismeans that the cross sectionaldirection will expand at about 2 times
more than the longitudinal direction. c. If there is any chemical spillage on
the surface, clean it as soon aspossible as certain chemicals willevaporate thus becoming moreconcentrated. Do not leave spilledchemicals on the surface overnightor over a prolonged period as it maydamage the surface.
When cleaning the surface, use a softdamp cloth with non-abrasive typeof cleaning agent.
d. Do not use strong acid or alkalinecleaning agents as they may stain ordamage the worktop surface.
e. Any residual adhesive, paint and dyeswill need to be removed quickly toavoid permanent staining on thesurface. Always use suitable type ofsolvent or mild household cleaningliquid to clean away these residues asrequired, use a non-abrasive cloth toclean it.

f. Common alcohol based disinfectantsor acetone can be used to disinfectthe surface.
g. Avoid using abrasive materials or sharpobjects sliding over the surface as itcan scratch the decorative surface.
h. Although the surface can resist180°C dry heat temperature, it isnot advisable to leave prolonged hightemperature objects on the surface.Always use insulated hot pads to putthe hot objects on instead of placingit directly onto the surface.

SITE WORK NOTES
FabricationLaminex Multipurpose CompactLaminates can be cut, drilled and machinedwith standard woodworking equipmentfitted with tungsten carbide edges.
Select brackets, hinges screws andfastening equipment etc. to suit theenvironment of the installation. Highercorrosive atmospheres such as salty andchlorine environments may be morecorrosive than inland dryer climates.Surface mounted objects should besecured using self-tapping screws, threadcutting screws or threaded brass inserts inpre-drilled holes.
Compact laminate is a very hard material,use high quality screws and predrill pilothole 0.5mm smaller than screw gauge as aguide, or follow as recommended byscrew manufacturer, caution not to overtighten to avoid snapping screw.
Screw locationScrews should be carefully positioned toprevent splintering and breakout – no closer than 20mm to an edge.
If screwing into an edge it is notrecommended to place it closer than75mm from end of a panel. (In generalscrews into the edges should be avoided).Through fixing is recommended for 6mmthick panels.
Metal brackets are recommended forsecuring the panels together.
Mitring of edges should be avoided asthey are vulnerable to damage.
A chamfered edge or crescent shapededge will avoid edge chipping or flaking.
Standard tools for hardwood can be usedfor machining or processing such assawing, drilling and routing.
Neither the surface nor the sawn edgesneed to be protected or sealed. Panelswill present a distinctive black edge.
Ensure that pooling of water on thesurfaces of Laminex MultipurposeCompact Laminate cannot occur andallow sufficient ventilation and drainage inenclosed spaces such as cabinets.
CUTTING DOORS OR PANELSTo minimise warping of doors and panelsit is recommended that panels must becut with the long edge parallel to thelength of the sheet. Warping occurs whenboth sides of a door or panel are notexposed to the same humidity level. Thelonger a sheet is, the larger the impact ofwarping will be. Ensure as far as possiblethat ambient conditions are the same oneach side of a panel as it is importantboth sides gain and lose moisture at thesame rate. Where panels are mounted on awall or enclosed in a cabinet for example,ensure adequate ventilation to ensuretemperature and humidity at the back of thepanel is essentially the same as the front. Fixingcentres should be sufficiently close to preventexcessive freedom of movement. Cubicaldoors for example greater than 1500mm highshould have 3 hinges as a minimum guide.
Note: An exception is when LaminexMultipurpose Compact Laminate is usedfor sash doors. The panels have to becut out of the width of the basic sheetsinstead of the length. If a sash door is cutout of the length of a sheet thehorizontal bow will interfere with thesliding action of the door. It is preferableto have a vertical bow for thisapplication and cutting out of the widthof the basic sheet is recommended. Ifblack core is scorched due to dull bladesor jamming when cutting, the edge canbe restored by taking a fine cut orsanding back to restore the black edge.

Maintaining clean fresh lookingblack core edgesThe black core is a visual feature ofLaminex Multipurpose CompactLaminate. This can be enhanced aftermachining and maintained by use of wetand dry sand paper. To prepare andsmooth the edge use extra fine (400grit)then burnish smooth using Ultra fine2000grit lubricated with linseed or tungoil. When complete wipe on linseed ortung oil to maintain surface. To maintainedges over time clean down and applyoil. Caution when preparing the edge donot damage the decorative surface.

Jig saw - Carbide-tipped, interior cornersof cut-outs should be drilled first with6mm hole diameter.
Entering tooth - At the decorative sideof the panel if only this side will be inview.
Cut edges - The best results are obtainedwith stationary machines. Any sharpedges can be removed with sand paper.
Rake angle - A rake angle of 45° givesthe best performance.
Corner profiles - First cut to length, thensaw to the correct length. Measure thelength of leg from the corner.
Routering - If panels are supplied with aprotective film do not remove it untilthese are assembled. If the film burns ormelts during routering, remove only thefilm in the edge areas.

DRILLINGThe most suitable drills used oncompact laminates are those designedfor plastic sheet materials. These drillshave a point angle of 60° - 80° insteadof the normal 120° for drilling metal. Toavoid breakout on the reverse side, thefeed speed of the drill head and thepressure applied should be graduallyreduced approaching the point ofbreakthrough. Working on a firmunderlay, such as plywood or chipboard,will also reduce the risk of breakout.
For blind boring into the face, the depthof the hole should be such that at least2mm of material remains between thebottom of the hole and the other sideof the sheet.
TCT lip and Sur drills will produce cleanflat bottom holes, with less risk of pointpenetration on the reverse side. This willallow maximum depth of material forfixing.
Compact sheets less than 10mm thick arenot considered suitable for blind fixing.
When drilling parallel to the surface(edge drilling) at least 3mm of materialmust remain on either side of the hole.
Threaded holes using engineers taps,thread cutting screws or threaded brassinserts may also be used.

GLUING1. Laminex Compact can be glued to
other types of materials with eitherepoxy or polyurethane adhesives.Both types of adhesives usage isapproximately 100-250 g/m2 withapplied pressure of at least 0.2N/mm2 for about 4-8 hours at 20deg C to ensure proper adhesion tothe joining parts.
2. It is also advisable to use mechanicalfastening to provide sufficient presspressure to the glued area to ensurethat both components are properlyintact after the adhesive is fully cured,for this please refer to the usage andinstruction guidelines of the glue.

3. If gluing 2 pieces of compact orstrips together, it is important toensure that both panels should be inthe same directional grain asillustrated in the Figure 6
4. It is advisable to pre condition or‘climatise’ the panels and strips to thesame environment condition beforegluing them together.
5. Remove any grease, dirt or dust onthe surface. Always use fine sandpaper to slightly roughen the surfaceto ensure good and proper adhesionof the glue.
6. It is very important to check withthe adhesive manufacturer thecorrect method of application
7. Ensure that the adhesive has a similaror better expansion and contractionrate as the compact. Alwaysremember that the maxiumexpansion and contraction isapproximately 2.5mm/m length.
CARE AND CLEANINGThe non-porous surface is easy to clean.For general cleaning, household cleaners,water or soap are highly recommended.
Do not use abrasive or polishingmaterials. Both the decorative surfaceand homogenous core of LaminexCompact Laminates are impervious andresistant to most commonly usedcleaning agents and disinfectants. Thesurfaces of Laminex MultipurposeCompact Laminate furniture can beeasily cleaned with a dry or damp clothand, if necessary, a mild householdcleaner. Wipe damp surfaces with anabsorbent cloth. High pressure watercleaning or steam cleaning of panels isnot recommended.
Removing Severe SoilingSeverely dirty surfaces or areas wherenormal soiling* has built up over a longperiod of time are easy to clean with
hot water and an interior detergent- orsoap-based cleaning agent, applied with asponge or soft nylon brush. Apply thediluted cleaning agent to the surface andleave it to soak for a while. Then rinseoff with clean water and dry with anabsorbent cloth.
*dust, dirt, coffee, tea, fruit juice, food residues, grease,soap residues, lime scale, water-soluble paints andadhesives.
Removing Special StainingSolvent-based varnishes and adhesives(nail varnish, rubber stamp ink, andaerosol paint) should be removed withorganic solvents such as acetone, whitespirit, turpentine or petroleum. Removewax from candles or crayonsimmediately with water and a mildhousehold cleaning agent. Dried waxstains may first have tobe scraped off with a wooden or plasticspatula and the remainder removed withan organic solvent. Two part paint oradhesive, synthetic resin and the likeshould be removed immediately withwater or an organic solvent. Once theseproducts have set, they cannot beremoved without damaging the surface.Lime scale can be removed with acidiccleaning agents containing approximately10% acetic acid or citric acid.
The manufacturer's instructions must bestrictly followed. Rinse surfaces andedges very thoroughly! Paint, varnish, ink,shoe polish, lipstick, tar and other soluble(but strong) stains can be removed withorganic solvents such as acetone, whitespirit, turpentine or petroleum spirit.
Rub silicone off dry or use siliconeremover. Both the decorative surfaceand core of Laminex MultipurposeCompact Laminates are highly resistantto most commonly-used disinfectantsLong term use of chlorine bleachcleaners, acidic or alkaline cleaners cancause colour and appearance changes tothe surface.
HANDLING & STORAGEDuring transportation use flat, stablepallets of at least the same dimensionsas the panel. When moving a sheet, lift itto prevent scratches on the surface.
The sheets should be stored in anenclosed area, protected against moistureand heat. For horizontal storage onpallets, the sheets should be supportedover the entire surface with a protectivelayer between the pallet and the bottomsheet and also on the uppermost sheet.
For vertical storage the sheets should beplaced on their sides, exactly vertical andbe supported over the full height.
Do not place paper or plastic betweentwo sheets of laminate. Remove stickersbefore fabrication. Remove theprotective foil within 24 hours of thepanels being removed from the pallet.
