I have been using this expression a lot this
year and it’s not because I believe the change
is a 2012 phenomena. Rather, I think the
nature of the direction of collecting this
year seems to me so much more pronounced
and probably only magnified by the surge in
online retail activity in the midst of strange
economic times. And profound is not too
stronger word for what auctioneers, deal-
ers in the traditional and collectors of the
traditional are experiencing when it comes
to this international economy for antiques
and collectables that for the best part of two
centuries has enjoyed a thriving collecting
community, a complimentary retail trade and
a myriad of auction houses that have always
enjoyed the spoils of this dynamic between
dealer and collector. But now things have
changed and I believe forever.
The waning appetite for “old things” seems
to have all of a sudden become more pro-
nounced and when they (buyers) do want
something old it is more about its look and
its capacity to enhance a look rather than
its particular rarity, materials or historical
context – if it possesses those qualities then
great but it is clearly not the core concern
for the new collector. The rusted bicycle for
instance is not just utility to discard anymore;
it is now something that might be now more
visually interesting than a traditional col-
lectable or antique. For the best part of the
1990s Victorian furniture was the metaphor
for this change in habit but it seems to have
extended further than just a loss of appetite
for “over-decorated mahogany and balloon
back designs”. The creep of collector malaise
is extending forward in time also, beyond the
Victorian period and in to any aesthetic that
is either romantic or classical - it is known
as the post-war aesthetic and it would be fair
to say that it represents the opportunity for
a new generation of traders and auctioneers
to “own and define” for future collecting
generations.
This phenomena played out in one of our
weekly auctions this year when we sold an
old metal climbing frame that one would find
in a children’s park and that once upon a time
would have only found its way to the scrap
metal yard. Instead it realised hundreds of
dollars and represented further proof of
how ultimately the eclectic buyer and now
the very influential decorator will ultimately
determine where taste and appetite are head-
ing. The post-war phenomena can be found
in other interesting items and categories.
Our sale earlier in the year of the Andy Mac
street art collection confirmed the interest in
very urban, very immediate and contempo-
rary imagery. Taken to its extreme this new
movement of collecting now recognises that
even a beautiful Bang & Olufsen Hi-Fi system
from the 1970s, more than just electrics and
wood, is worth cherishing as a relic of an era,
regardless of how recent that era is!
Despite this shift in attention to the post-
war period I think there really is room for a
resurgence in collecting across the ages but it
needs to take a very different form and needs
to be completely reinvented. The traditional
Australian form of collecting “a lot of some-
thing and lining it all up in cabinets” was as
much to do with the collector as it was to do
with the dealer supplying it and I think this
genre of collecting is dead in the water. Aus-
tralians have always struggled a little with
the idea of an eclectic style and it is probably
to do with the relative youth of our collect-
ing history when compared to Europe and
the UK. The marrying of the Georgian, the
antique, the Victorian, the contemporary,
the silly object, the old toy and the discarded
metal window frame can be done beauti-
fully and it is this new playful, unpretentious
and very personal look that I think the more
adventurous collectors and dealers are gen-
erating successfully and to a new audience
that is genuinely responding to it. Why? I
think because it is without the intellectual
snobbery that has imbued so much of collect-
ing discourse and because it is an “inclusive”
type of collecting – it allows you to collect the
silly object, the old frame or the metal instru-
ment simply because you engage with it and
not because you “should” be collecting it.
Just recently, at the auction of the contents
of David Bromley’s Chapel Street studio
this new approach proved well and truly its
arrival as the new collecting modus oper-
andi. David’s studio reflected exactly what
the public is now after and that is a very
sincere and comprehendible assemblage of
design, furnishings, art and objects from so
many periods and regions. The bidding and
interest levels for every piece, that had its
own special place within the collection, was
nothing short of breathtaking and marked for
me anyway a new and more exciting path for
the collector, the dealer and the auctioneer.

BRoMLEY FANS LoCKED oUT“If proof were needed that artist David Bromley has broad appeal, it was
found in Melbourne on Sunday. Held on site at Bromley’s former Melbourne
studio in Chapel Street, South Yarra, Leonard Joel’s sale of the contents of the
artist’s studio grossed $805,250 – well above its $472,650 to $720,400 pre-sale
estimate – and $982,000, including buyer’s premium.
“His following is breathtaking,” says Leonard Joel managing director John
Albrecht, who sees the sale’s success as a key moment in Joel’s rejuvenation.
“We had to lock out buyers at the door at 11.15am, unfortunately, because the
entire three floors were at capacity.”
The eclectic 601-lot sale ranged from artworks by Bromley and other
contemporary artists to sculptures, ornaments, furniture, and bric-a-brac. In all,
588 lots, or 98 per cent of items, found new homes, with many of the buyers
new to Joels.
The vast majority of items were priced at less than $10,000, many less than
$3000, and it was here that a lot of the wildly better than expected prices were
achieved.
The highest price was paid for a work by Bromley, a large bronze sculpture
called Celebration. It was hammered down for $45,000, under its $50,000 to
$60,000 estimate.
Bromley, 52, has moved to Byron Bay. He is also looking to onsell the leasehold
to the studio, which is in the old Dan Murphy building.”

World record price for David Bromley’s
sculpture Celebration
When Leonard Joel announced several
weeks ago via its digital media channels that
it would be selling the third and final part
of David Bromley’s private collection Face
book, Twitter and leading art and design
blogs were literally abuzz. It was about then
that we should have known that this auction
would be different at every level. Additional
reporting from The Age, The Australian and a
Channel 31 art series documentary on David
before the auction meant that collectors and
decorators from all over the country and the
world were talking about the auction.
“It was probably during our Saturday pre-
viewing that I realised this auction would
be different. We had more than a thousand
people viewing that day; unheard of numbers
by auction standards! Auction day proved
what I suspected. The doors opened at 10am
for the auction and within an hour we had
to close the doors because the triple story
Victorian studio could literally hold no more!
Online bidding was at record levels, prices
were regularly tripling and quadrupling
estimates and the room was packed with a
record number of first time buyers. It was an
auctioneer’s dream auction and I have David
to thank for that” John Albrecht, Managing
Director at Leonard Joel
David’s Chapel Street Studio Collection
comprised just over 600 lots of art,
furnishings, objects, items of design and
utility plus all the items one would expect in
a busy artist’s studio right down to colourful
palettes used by David. Consistent and
enthusiastic room bidding meant that the
auction ran well in to the evening and during
the nine hour auction some very interesting
results were generated. The highlight was
undoubtedly the sale of the monumental
bronze sculpture by David Bromley titled
Celebration which was made up of seven
life size children holding hands in various
moments of running and skipping. The
outdoor piece sold for $54,900 (IBP) to a
local collector and set a new world record
for a work by the artist. Bidding duels were
rampant even for some of the more unusual
items. A large vintage French “HOTEL” sign
that David loved sold for six times its low
estimate to sell for $9,760 IBP. Of the 600 lots
offered only 9 had not found buyers and the
auction realised a staggering $982,000 (IBP)
from an original low estimate of $470,000.
Nicole Salvo, Assistant Head of Art for
Leonard Joel, commented after the auction:
“This single-owner auction was literally
lapped up by not just collectors but passionate
private decorators of all ages. Why? I think
it’s because David has a unique sensibility
and aesthetic that makes sense to the
onlooker. Everything in the collection was
very personal to David and everything had
its “spot” – when people were viewing the
collection they also knew immediately what
to do with the piece and where to place it in
their own home or dwelling. I think in this
way the auction represented a more relaxed
buying environment than one normally gets
in the very formulaic, traditional auction
setting”.
Leonard Joel is now seeking single-owner
collections for its 2013 auction calendar.

THE MURRAY WALKER CoLLECTIoN – A UNIqUE SINGLE-oWNER AUCTIoNLeonard Joel have secured the entire studio
and home contents of the well known
Australian artist, collector and social
historian Murray Walker. Known to many
within the art and museum communities
for his detailed and ranging knowledge
of early Australian history Murray has
now decided, in his own words, “that it
is time to share the collection”. Murray
has been collecting for half a century and
the collection of objects, art, ephemera,
memorabilia and bush furniture presents
an eclectic and very personal survey of
Murray’s collecting taste. As a writer and
cultural anthropologist Murray can truly
lay claim to have “travelled the world” and
immersed himself in so many cultures –
in this sense the collection is very much a
“world collection”. The auction is set for
mid February 2013 and further details will
be provided on our website shortly.

Gun), Robert DeNiro (Taxi Driver),

Leafing through one of a raft of photograph
albums belonging to the late Merrit Ruddock
(1913-1988), striking images of exotic loca-
tions visited during a colourful career as a
broadcaster, industrialist and member of the
United States diplomatic corps call to mind
a by-gone era of travel, when the world was
seen from the deck of a ship and it was noth-
ing out of the ordinary for an ambassador to
have his car transported with him to a far-
flung posting.
While the identities of many of the people
and exotic locations pictured in the photo-
graphs are now lost with the passage of time,
Ruddock’s legacy remains in the collection
of antique furniture and objects he assem-
bled with his wife, Signe, which will be dis-
persed by Leonard Joel’s Specialist Collector
department in May 2013.
Housed in a purpose built room in the palatial
Mount Macedon residence shared by Signe
and Merrit in the last years of his life, the col-
lection ranges from 19th century British and
European furniture through to marble and
bronze statuary. Notable amongst the statues
in the collection is a bust in Carrara marble
entitled, ‘God Unknown,’ by the Lithuanian-
born American sculptor, Boris Lovet-Lorski
(1894-1973), dating from 1929. Executed in
the high-Art Deco style, the statue depicts
the stylised visage of a male, his head down-
cast and was a centrepiece of the Ruddocks’
collection.
The Ruddock collection is typical of the cur-
rent thirst amongst collectors for the per-
sonal context behind their purchases. Prove-
nance has always been important, but a good
back story about how the collection came
about can place it in a whole new – and more
appealing – light. Over the past three years,
the Leonard Joel Specialist Collector depart-
ment has helped clients realise sales by vol-
ume of up to 90% in the sale and marketing
of single owner and in many cases, single
category collections. Whether the collection
is sold as a dedicated section of a mixed cat-
egory auction, or a dedicated single-owner
sale either in-situ at the client’s property or
at Leonard Joel’s primary South Yarra sale-
rooms, The Specialist Collector department
can offer tailored marketing packages and
access to one of the most diverse and active
specialist client databases in Australia.
