• Provide an introduction to Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute Pritzker Library and Lurie Children’s Health Sciences Library resources & services

• Provide tips and tricks on the Galter Health Sciences Library online catalog for literature/article searches

• Provide an overview of EndNote, a bibliographicmanagement software

• All are available for: consultation, training, access to resources, literature searching and more

• All license and/or have access to many online resources• In many circumstances, if you contact Galter Library you

will be referred to Pritzker or Health Sciences librarians

4

How to start…Visit the Galter Health Sciences Library at

https://galter.northwestern.edu

Search for articles, journals, books, databases, etc.

Click on Advanced Search to refine

5

How to find…

Search results

Library garden figures by Tom Otterness

In second example, two choices – select Lurie Children’s access (note: if you are NU faculty, staff or student, selecting NU or Lurie should work)

In first example, one choice – Lurie Children’s has access

6

How to find…

Digging deeper First option: NU

Second option: Lurie Children’s is an

“affiliated hospital” Note that access only

includes 2001 to 2016

7

What if this happens?

Tiny print says: “No NetID? Attempt to access this resource without signing in”

“The Guardian” by Russ Vogt

8

A few notes on access• If you have a NetID, sign into

Galter and check the box that says “Remember me for four weeks”

• If you don’t have a NetID, click here

• If the resource note says “Access restricted to Lurie Children’s, go to AllConnect

9

If you can’t get the items you need?

• Visit the Galter Health Sciences Library

• Send an email to Peggy– Will try to access

– Will order items at your request

“Judy’s Hand” by Tony Tasset

10

EndNote: installation• NU faculty, staff and students

can install EN through NUIT

• Lurie Children’s staff cancontact IM to have EN installed– use the My Helpdesk link to submit a ticket

11

EndNote: starting a new library• First things first! Remember to format your library before

inputting references

• Go to Tools -> Open Term Lists -> Journals Term List

• OK to import more than one, but needs to be done one at a time

• This step will ensure that your references will be formattedcorrectly

12

EndNote: inputting references• There are three ways to input references:

1. Manual – this is the least preferred method. Only use when you cannot find the reference online.

2. Search online databases within EN – ok to use for knownreferences, when you just need a few, etc.

3. Search online databases directly – best choice, especially for searches that will retrieve lots of references.

13

EndNote: inserting references• You can insert a reference by selecting it in EN and using the

EN menu in Word• Other options for inserting references such as drag-and-drop• The manuscript can be reformatted using any style

– Example: Nature Genetics style: Ambartsumyan, L. et al. Proceedings of the 2018 Advances in Motility and in Neurogastroenterology: AIMING for the Future Single Topic Symposium. J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr (2020).

– Example: NEJM style: Ambartsumyan L, Khlevner J, Nurko S, et al. Proceedings of the 2018 Advances in Motility and in Neurogastroenterology: AIMING for the Future Single Topic Symposium. J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr 2020.

14

EndNote: training and help• Galter Library is a wonderful resource for EN training. Take a

class or review their very thorough LibGuides– EN for Mac– EN for Windows– FAQs

• Peggy can train you or your team at any time• The EndNote website contains lots of training and

troubleshooting resources• If you are experiencing technical difficulties, the EN team

can help – check out their FAQs or ask a question.

Search tips

10,000 results??

• Breaking down the question into topics

• Keyword searches versus controlled vocabulary

• What keywords should you use? Variations?

• Limits on searches – time period, age, etc.

• How do you know if you did a “good” search? Does such a thing even exist?
