Electric Multiple Unit -M- ~
New York, Usj
Under joint agreement to the
Metropolitan TransportationAuthority / Long Island Rail Road(LIRR) and the Metro-NorthRailroad (MNR), BombardierTransportation is providingElectric Multiple Unit (EMU) M- 7commuter cars to LIRR to beginreplacement of its MetropolitanM-I commuter car fleet.
The interior of the LIRR'"Car of the Future" was designelwith the input of the passengerand employees and includes a]ADA compliant toilet, cellulatelephone and wide, single-leasliding doors for ease of entry an
exit.
The units are equipped withBombardier's renowned stainlesssteel carbodies for long life andlow maintenance, and asynchro-nous AC motors featuring state-of-the-art IGBT {isolated gate bipo-lar transistors) inverters. Use ofoutboard-bearing bolsterless fab-ricated bogies offers considerableweight savings over cast bogies.
Chartered in 1834, the LongIsland Rail Road is the largestCommuter Rail system in NorthAmerica.
Bombardier's new ElectricMultiple Units, its first railcarcontract for the LIRR, will servicethe Long Island commuter lines, constituting 80% of the system.

An impressive result ofBombardier's ongoing researchand development activities, theElectric Multiple Units (EMUs)delivered to the societe de trans-port de la Communaute urbainede Montreal feature technologicaladvances that make them safe, reliable, high-performing andeconomical. Technical innova-tions and improvements include:
.A propulsion system that uses
asynchronous alternating cur-rent motors -requiring less
maintenance than direct cur-
rent motors.
.Outboard bearing bogies whichare considerably lighter than
casted bogies and provide a
smoother ride at higher speeds.
.Wide side doors at both higand low platform levels tallow quick loading/unloadinand to eliminate the need f(J
stepwell trap operation. These modern units are ii

The Highliners were desig.. 'E;=:=!t by the St.Louis Car Company for operation on the IllinoisCentral Gulf Railroad's corr. -wluter lines in the Chicago area. Following the initial order of131 such cars in 1970, a.. additional 36 cars were ordered from Bombardier in 1976and placed into service b~ ~inning in 1978. The cars not only offer a low weight-to-passenger ratio. but make I-. -~..e efficient use of manpower than conventional single levelcars.
The car bodies, constr <ted of low alloy -high tensile steel, feature two levels forseated passengers, both o"f '--.;/hich may be monitored by railroad personnel from the firstlevel for ticket taking, etc. .0 c::=:::cess to the upper level is via stairwells located at the centerof the car .
Used in commuter se r~ice. the cars serve numerous communities to the south ofChicago. One route. South c::=: -.'icago. operates on a boulevard median strip while another. toBlue Island. operates for a ~ ~onsiderable distance on single track.
~ned and built to operate in the severe winters experienced inDf -20°F and snowfalls of 20 inches and more.
The cars have been des. -Chicago, with temperature~
