Title your paper “Geography Journal #1”

Recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans cannot locate America on a world map.

Why do you think that is?

Take a moment and “think” about it before responding.

I. WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY?“How Geographers Look at the World”

LEARNING GOAL: Today we will examine exactly what we will be

studying in this class throughout the year.

Lets first examine what this class will not be about?

So then, what is the class going to be about?

Geography is the study of the earth and of the ways of the people who live

and work on it.

INSTRUCTIONS:

I) Get into groups of five.

II) Each group needs to gather around one of the designated sections on the white boards. Each group member should have a marker.

III) At this point there is no talking. Take a moment to think about the prompt on the following slide.

List as many characteristics as possible describing the geography of Texas.

Geography - the study of the earth and of the ways of the people who live and work on it.

Remember, no talking at this point. Just write.

Many of you probably had a difficult time describing the geography of Texas because the above

definition is very broad.

questions to ask or study about a country

or region.

How to study the geography of a country/ region:

If you were asked to study the geography of a country called Mali, what would be your first

question in order to get started?

I) LOCATION: “Where is it?”

II) Place- “What is it like there?”* There are four factors that determine the answer to this question:
