March MeetingWED, MAR 25th CALIFORNIA AUTO DETAILINGby Bill O'Connell
As I sit here in 27 inches of snow itis hard to believe that spring is aroundthe comer, but I know in my heart that itis. As such, it is time to think ofgetting your Porsche in tip top shape, notto mention cleaning up the poor beater thattook the brunt of the salt this winter. With this in mind, we are having themeeting at California Detailing, a firmthat specializes in making your car sparklelike the ones in the car ads. They willshow us step by step how to perform magic.
There is one hitch to this. Parking islimited and is mostly on street so pleaseheed the following advice: 1) Group upwhere possible to cut down on the number ofcars. 2) Leave your Porsche at home and
bring your 2nd car - Al's fines aresuspended for the night. It is not a badneighborhood but better safe then sorry.
DIRECTIONS: Schuylkill Expressway toBelmont exit. Turn left (or right if youwere going west on the Expressway) andcross over the river. They are located onthe far left corner at the light at the endof the bridge. The best parking is to turnleft and get into one of the parkingcutouts. You can also go through the lightand left onto their sidewalk or on thesidewalk across the street but that is verylimited. There is metered parking if youturn right at the light. DO NOT park underthe tracks - you do NOT want the stuff thatdrips on your car!!!

Golf, How to Win One
Golf? What does that have to do with
Porsches and anyway, I thought we were donewith his ramblings now that he isn't editoranymore. Well as far as the ranblings go,making me Vice President isn't likely toslow me down. And the Golf I am writingabout is not the game, but the semi-ex-stepbrother, the GTI made by VW.
Last fall Valvoline decided to have a
sweepstakes for SCCA members to give awaysome oil (surprise, surprise), Helaheadlights, Goodyear tires, Konig seats, atrip to Harvey's Casino, and Steve Beizer's1985 Showroom Stock Golf GTI which Gene
Hackman had raced in the Playboy series. It was a hard contest to enter - you had topull out the postcard, fill in your name, address, and SCCA number, and mail it. Theheadline read "WIN THIS CAR" so I did!.They held the drawing on Friday the 13th atthe national convention in Denver and at
1:15 AM I got a call telling me that out of14,000 entries, I had won the car.Surprise is an understatement. I decided awhile back that someone has to win these
things, and if you enter you may not be thewinner but if you don't, it is guaranteed
by Bill O'Connell
that you won't. But I never really thoughtI would win the car. A case of oil, maybesome headlights if I was real lucky, but aCAR? The car was delivered by Steve in hisenclosed trailer and it is super.
Aside from a few modifications it isjust like the one you could buy from yourlocal VW dealer. Some of the differencesare - full roll cage, racing seat, specialcustom one of a kind Koni shocks, a ratherunique blue and white with orange trimpaint job, lots of stickers all over thebody, spiffy Wolfrace mags, a strangesounding exhaust system, and a motor whichseems to have a tad more power than thelast GTI I drove. Oh yes, no radio or air. After driving it for a few hours I have thefollowing observations. When cold, theKonis have all the flexibility of a brick. After it is driven a bit it will smooth out
to something akin to a buckboard wagon. Isit fun? No question about it. What am Igoing to do with it? Not quite sure justyet. It will become a hillclimb car togive me something to do between runs withthe 944. It will also be a semi-street car
- at least until my back gives out. So howdo you win one? Enter those easy contests!

SCCA Solo I News
As you may know. Bill O'Connellran Duryea Hillclimb last year andI think he is hooked. He'll beback and A1 Anderson is showinginterest. There just may be othersout there who would like to give ita try. The schedule for this yearis still tentative but it shouldn'tmove around that much. The finaldates will be set within a monthfrom this writing. There are plansfor 4 hillclimbs and possibly asmany as 2 flat-track Solo I events(Pocono and Summit Point) in theNortheast Division of the SCCA thisyear.
May 9-10 Montage or SpringWeatherly Hillclimb
July 11-12 Giants DespairHillclimb
Aug 22-23 Duryea HillclimbOct 10-11 Fall Weatherly
Hillclimb
In addition, in the SoutheastDivision of SCCA, there are twoSolo I hillclimbs to be run inWestern North Carolina. These are
the Chimney Rock Hillclimb, April25 and 26 and Grandfather
Hillclimb, September 19 and 20.There is a small migration ofdrivers from our area to one orboth of these since they usuallyfit neatly into the schedule.
Car preparation for safety anddriver outfitting are essentiallythe same as if you were going roadracing. Drivers must wear the fullsuits of fire resistant materialover approved underwear, have a '75or later Snell approved helmet ('85recommended & '80 required forSpecial Solo I events) and haveshoes, socks and gloves of approvedmaterial. The cars must have rollbars and in some cases, roll cages,5 or 6 point driver restraintsystems and on-board fireextinguishers. Those of you whoare interested can get all thedetails in the just published 1987editions of Solo I and II rules, theGeneral Competition Rules (GCR)and the appropriate car specification requirements applicableto the four-wheeler you would liketo run. Anyone interested can callJess at 766-8201.

Autocross Program is Saved
Our President has worked his magicand managed to secure a trulyexcellent autocross site at the
Sheraton-Valley Forge on Rt 363(between Rt202, Rt422, and theTurnpike). The location offers easyaccess, restaurants, and a place todown a few cold ones after a toughday around (or over) the pylons.
A great burden has been lifted frommy shoulders. I'm looking forwardto an exciting and successfulseason. I should know the exact
dates within a week and they willbe in next month's issue.
Let's make this a great season byattending the events and developingthe skills necessary to defeatthose Corvettes at the end of the
year .

SCCA Autocross Eventsby Vern Lyie
One of those editorialgremlins crept in last month andchanged a few autocross sites. Toset it straight, Susquehanna RegionSCCA runs a school plus 8 eventsaround Harrisburg, and BrandywineMotor Club runs a school plus 6events at Gloucester CountyCommunity College. Thelocal schedule will be available atthe next meeting.
The first event is a school onMarch 28 at the Information Centerof the Hershey Chocolate Factory.Arrive around 9:00 and you'll get somuch run time you'll ask to quit. They've done a good job in the past, and while that doesn't guaranteefuture performance... There is afull event on the following day,Sunday, March 29 and they run afirst come-first served heat system.
True to form, SCCA has changedthe classification of a whole bunchof cars right before the seasonstarts, so forget tbe listing givenlast month. As per the '87Rulebook,our cars run as follows:
A Stock - all 911, 914-6 and4-cyl Carrera
B Stock - 928C Stock - 912, 914/2.0D Stock - 356, 914 1.7 and 1.8,
all 944 and 924SG Stock - 924 and 924 Turbo
The Phila Region SCCA will runits first two events at PlymouthMeeting Mall (April 26 and May 3)and other sites are to be determined. All the local events will be rununder formal heat system, and you'llonly have to be there half a day.Basically, you work one heat of 25cars, run the next heat and you'redone. There are variations, ofcourse — call me if you need moreinfo, (679-9262, eves or 661-7011,days).

To the Editor
In reply to Betsi Marsh Leidy'sLetter from February.
Dear Betsi;
I would just like to thank youfor your editorial letter in theFebruary issue of Der Gasser.
As you are aware, we here atAutofest have "busted our camshafts"to improve the Autocross program ofthe Riesentoter Region. We haveprovided the portable toilets, sodaand have even had a crew at thetrack site to sweep the debris offthe surface, I think that with yourhelp, along with the help of JimConfer, we can turn the Autocrossprogram into what it could andshould be.
I speak personally, just as youhave, on how autocrossing progressedme, as a driver, onto bigger andbetter things. Eric Prywitowski

30th AnniversaryUPDATE
by Bill O'Connell
The March meeting will be the last timeto order 30th stuff at a discount, so comeprepared.
To date I have lined up A1 Holbert'scar, two 718 RSKs, and three 356s, with agood chance of a 935. With over 550members in our region there must be a fewmore out there with some history behindthem so lets get cracken folks. There willalso be a special edition of Der Gasserpublished in addition to the August issue. If you have old pictures or articles pleaseget them to Debbie Cooper or me soon.
I gave you some bad information on theonly parade we sponsored. We alsoco-sponsored a parade with Northern NewJersey. Just goes to show that we reallydo need a club historian to keep track ofthings as our region gets older. Debbie isvery excited about collecting all the factsabout the region since it's birth in '57 sohelp her out with whatever you may have.
We hand wash and detail cars and don't missa thing. We even clean the door jams. Iusemywife's Q-Tips" to scour the airconditioningvents. When we're finished there shouldn'tbe a mark on the car. Most of mycustomersarc in awe. The rest are ecstatic.
