LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR !!

Dear Parents and Students: !Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year in the Vocal Music Department at Marshfield High School! This year is an exciting time for everyone returning as well as those who are just joining our music program. Last year was a wonderful time of growth and music making! I hope you all continue to build upon your previous experiences, friendships and musical abilities together as ensembles throughout the year. !For those of you new to the program, My Name is Allison Bassett and I am your conductor and music teacher. I am a native of Coos Bay and former graduate of Marshfield High School. I know first-hand how impactful the rich history and music excellence of this vocal music department has had on the students at Marshfield and on the community, and I am excited to continue fostering these beautiful traditions we have here as well as continue to create new ones with your children and yourselves. Choral music is and has been an important part of my life, and I hope to create a program that fosters and inspires growth, learning, and a love of music. !It is also imperative that we have fun and enjoy being together as ensembles in the Vocal Music Department. This school year is filled with many exciting and fulfilling choral festivals, concerts, and field trips that are designed to promote an optimal music experience, as well as create well-rounded musicians at MHS. !Parents and students should take time to carefully read and review the 2014-2015 Marshfield High School Vocal Music Handbook together and then RETURN the informational forms. It is vital to our program’s success that all involved give our best effort and support to each other. Communication is our most valuable tool to help us achieve success. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at your convenience. !I look forward to getting to know all of you that are just starting your Choral Music involvement and also working again with all of you returning students! !LETS HAVE A GREAT YEAR!!!! With Harmony, !!!Allison M. Bassett Director of Choral Activities & Theatre Arts 541.269.6668 allisonb@coos-bay.k12.or.us

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY !!!The MHS Choral Department is committed to the belief that every student needs and deserves a first-hand experience in learning and creating music. We are dedicated to fostering the musical, intellectual, and emotional growth of every student through music and providing the countless benefits studying and performing music gives each student. Music is an outlet for learning how to express feelings and emotions while giving the musician a feeling of accomplishment and achievement as it is learned and mastered. Music education fosters skills in language, history, mathematical elements, cultural ties and in building interpersonal relationships. The vocal music opportunities at Marshfield High School are a significant part of our school and district curriculum, and thusly enhance the high school experience for any student.!It is expected that the goal of each music student is: 1. To discover, appreciate and value one’s own talents, the talents of others, and the beauty of all

types of music; 2. To foster a desire to improve their musical abilities, increase vocal skills, and gain knowledge

and awareness of the voice, music theory, and music history; 3. To foster confidence through creative self-expression and to gain a sense of self-fulfillment by

striving to reach their full potential at both the rehearsal and performance level; 4. To develop an awareness of the aesthetics of music, and provide an opportunity to enhance

one’s musical artistry; 5. To experience self-fulfillment and gain confidence from communicating to others through

music; and 6. To be motivated and inspired to become a life-long performer and connoisseur of music in an

context !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SENIOR PROJECT INFORMATION A culminating project in music for seniors to share, perform or discuss their work. !

Seniors are the leaders of the music department and younger members look to you for inspiration and guidance. The “Senior Project” is an opportunity for you to share your work in music of your choosing with others. In sharing your hard work, you may inspire others or expose community members to something new or unexplored. !PROPOSAL DUE: September 29, 2014 !All senior members of the Vocal Music Department must complete a senior project of their choosing before the end of the School Year. Your proposal form is due September 13, 2013. After approval, you are then to confirm your mentor (Mrs. Bassett or someone who can help you complete your project) as well as your venue (choir room, classroom, coffee shop, grade school, retirement home, drama lab, etc.). !!A senior project may consist of: !- A Vocal Recital: seniors taking voice lessons - Performance @ a concert solo or in a small ensemble (outside of your regular ensemble) - Display of other musical talents - Music Composition project - Cross-curricular project (music & dance, language & music theatre & music, history & music, math & music, art & music) - An academic paper & discussion - Music education: developing a lesson, implementing at a Blossom Gultch or Madison classroom - Choral conducting: working with Mrs. Bassett to conduct at a concert or small event - An explorative project on “Why I stayed in Choir” - Create & direct a music video - Kids Choir at BOYS & GIRLS CLUB !These are just examples–PLEASE feel free to think outside the box about your interests and ideas! !You will work collaboratively with Mrs. Bassett to develop your project. We will have checkpoints throughout both semesters to make sure you stay on track. !This is not meant to create more work for you, but to utilize talents/activities you are already involved in or to involve interests that you feel will enhance your music education. !Things to think about: - This project could be used for college entrance in any program as a work-sample achievement. - Students hoping to pursue a music degree or involved in music at college can direct this project into a vein of music you wish to pursue. - If you wish to learn how to use a program such as Sibelius, Finale, Garage Band etc., this is an option!! - This does not have to be exclusively written! Again, think outside the box! !!More than anything, this is an opportunity for all of us to share and support our music ventures. I hope that you take time to think about what would enhance your senior year experience in the MHS Music Department. !!!!!
