Parent involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two way, and
meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school
activities, including and ensuring that:
Parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning
That parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education
and are more included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory
committees to assist in the education of their child;
We believe in the importance of parents as their child’s first teacher. We also believe
that only a team approach that includes a commitment from all of the individuals that
influence a child’s day can assist in making each child successful academically and
individually.
Parenting
Martin Luther King Elementary will ask parents to complete a parent interest survey in
order to gather information from parents concerning the activities they feel would be
most beneficial in their efforts to support their child academically. A prepared family
information packet will be distributed consisting of Martin Luther King’s Parental
Involvement Plan, tip-sheets on homework, study guides and the note-taking process, a
list of teachers and the subjects they teach, and school policies and procedures. A
calendar of school events, school functions, parental involvement district wide events,
and Martin Luther King’s parent school activities will also be distributed to parents.

Resources are provided for parents in the Parent Center. Parents may check out
materials, use the computer to check grades, and visit educational Web sites. Parents
are encouraged to view the Title I Plan located in the parent resource center or media
center. A suggestion sheet is also available for parental input. The school will open the
resource center during normal school hours. The following items and information

Communicating
A Title I, Part A School, an Annual Title I Meeting will be conducted annually. The
agenda, sign-in sheet and minutes for this meeting will be generated separately from
any other events and kept on file in the school’s office. The school will hold their annual
Title I meeting separate from any other meetings or activities to ensure that they have
ample time to provide a description/ explanation of school curriculum, information on
forms of academic assessments used to measure student progress and information on

proficiency level students are expected to meet. The meeting will be held August 12,
2019 by Principal, Karen Carter.
The Little Rock School District’s 2019-2020 preliminary Title I, Part A allocation was greater
than $500,000.00 which means that M. L. King’s share of the required 1% reservation is
$1,458.60 for Parent Engagement. Parents will be notified of the allotted amount and
will have the opportunity to voice how they would like the funds used for parent and
family engagement activities in a parent survey sent home in each student’s take
home folder. The Parent and Family Engagement Committee will review the results
from the survey and provide input regarding the allotment of funds for parent and
family engagement activities. Past examples of spending include Family Game Night,
Family Camp Night, Family STEM night, Parent Center materials, and homework help
kits.
In order to communicate with parents, students have folders they take home each day,
which are to be signed by the parent nightly. The information packet will be distributed
to students in their daily take-home folders. This will include a link to the school’s
website where they can review the plan and keep up with other school events.
Communication will be provided in English and Spanish, if needed. Parents can visit the
Media Center during Parent-Teacher conferences or at any time during school hours to
review and sign-off on the school and district Parent and Family Engagement Plans. We
will communicate with parents in the following ways to increase classroom instruction:
Distributing monthly newsletters developed by the school leadership team,
principal, staff, students, or parent volunteers. (Principal, Karen Carter 501-447-

Routinely contacting parents via email, telephone or written correspondence on
an individual basis to communicate about their child’s progress. (All classroom
teachers & specialists)
Posting grades to E-School on a weekly basis. (All classroom teachers)

Volunteering
Martin Luther King Elementary will provide a list of volunteer opportunities and solicit
ideas for other types of volunteer efforts from all stakeholders. Volunteers will be
recruited and trained . Teachers will explain the requirements to parents and
encourage them to become involved in the school. Brief training sessions will provide
parents and community members with the information they need to participate as
school volunteers in order to put them at ease and make the experience pleasant and
successful.

Learning at Home
School staff, parents, and students will develop a school-parent-student compact. This
compact will outline how parents, school staff, and students share the responsibility for
improving student academic achievement and the means by which the school and
parents will build and develop a partnership to help children achieve the state’s high
academic standards.

Decision Making
The school will engage parents in the annual evaluation of the school’s ACSIP Plan and
the Title I, Part A Program’s parental involvement efforts through an annual evaluation
using a comprehensive needs assessment. This assessment will be completed by
teachers, parents and school staff. The principal will designate (1) certified staff
member to serve as a parent facilitator.

The school will continue to work with all stakeholders. We will continue to seek
additional community partners. Martin Luther King Elementary will plan the following

parent capacity.

National Network of Partnership Schools
Martin Luther King Elementary School is a member of Johns Hopkins University of
National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS). The NNPS School, Family, and
Community Partnership model is designed to enhance parent participation and
involvement in the school and community. The model is research based and references
six types of involvement: parenting, communicating, volunteering, student learning,
decision-making, and collaborating with the community. To support the six types of
involvement, King participates on the LRSD NNPS Central-East School Cluster Team. For

School Visitors and Volunteers MLK welcomes and encourages parents to visit the building often. Parents play an integral part of the educational system and we feel that any time you are able to spend with us at the school is of great value. All visitors must report to the office or security desk upon entering the building. Parents and volunteers are reminded to sign the VIPS book to ensure accurate credit for service. The district has installed an entry system that will allow visitors in the building. Upon arrival, push the button and wait for the buzz-in sound to enter the building. Pull the door with the entry sign only to enter.
Parent/Teacher/Student Conference The LRSD has two scheduled parent conferences throughout the year. We also encourage parents to meet with teachers, as needed, to discuss your child’s progress. Students will be involved with all conferences this year and will actually assist in leading the conferences. Parents wishing to meet with the teacher may call or send a note to set an appointment. Conferences must occur during non-instructional times. Student Responsibility Students are responsible for arriving to school on time prepared to learn. This entails arriving to school in the appropriate school uniform with school supplies. Students should not bring items that will interfere with the educational process, including candy, gum, toys, phones, electronic games, large sums of money, etc. Student Arrival

Each child is expected to arrive to school on time each day. School officially begins at 7:40 and students are considered tardy at 7:45. A child that is tardy misses valuable instructional time and also interrupts the learning of other students. Please make it a priority to have your child at school, on time, each and every day. Ensuring that students remain the entire day is also important. Students should not be checked-out early unless they have a doctor’s appointment or family emergency. Student Attendance Students are expected to be in school except in cases of illness, religious holidays, or family emergency. It is the responsibility of the parent to call the school by noon if your child is going to be absent. A doctor’s statement will be needed for an extended illness. In accordance with Act 1308, adopted by the Arkansas Legislature, March 1997, a student who has accumulated nine or more unexcused absences will be referred to the Pulaski County Juvenile Court. School Uniforms A safe and disciplined learning environment is the first requirement of a great school. ML King Elementary is a uniform school. We believe that uniforms are a positive and creative way to reduce discipline problems and to build school spirit. We are asking that all parents ensure that all students follow the school uniform policy each and every day. If all students follow the policy then the students and staff are able to focus on education and learning.
Navy or khaki shorts, long pants, jumpers (solid color or plaid) and skirts
White, light blue, navy, purple, pink, green, or yellow shirts with a collar. MLK t-shirts can also be worn as part of the uniform.
Students will be allowed to wear blue jeans and a MLK t- shirt as part of the school uniform on Fridays.
Breakfast and Lunch Program Breakfast - (Adult - $2.00) Lunch - (Adult - $4.00) Based on Act 1220 on Child Health, the cafeteria will be providing healthy and balanced meals. Meal will be provided to students at no charge for breakfast and lunch. If students choose not to eat school lunch, they must bring a full lunch from home. The school is allowed to have two parties throughout the school year, Winter Holiday and Valentine’s Day. The school is not allowed to have individual birthday parties for students. Parents are allowed to bring healthy snacks for celebrations when approved by the teacher and/or principal.

Assist families with parenting skills and setting home conditions to
