Stores the shows to be viewed at

a later time

Users don’t have to be present to record the show due to scheduled recording

Ability to fast-forward through commercials once the program has been recorded

In certain models you can burn it to DVD to make a portable hard copy

Better quality than VHS recordings

Started recording from cable and antenna

but eventually paired models with DIRECTV
