Introduction

: “information describing spatial data sets and spatial data services and making it possible to discover, inventory and use them.”

Metadata is:

The European Commission (2007)

EN ISO 19115:2005, Geographic information - Metadata1

ISO/TS 19139:2007 defines Geographic MetaData XML (gmd) encoding, an XML Schema

80% of the spatial datasets had no metadata,

18% of the spatial datasets had CEN metadata

2% of the spatial datasets had (some) CEN metadata

135 man years are required to produce metadata for the current spatial data sets (807.000 files x 0,25 uur/1500 uur.

Conclusions and Recommendations

What are the reasons why Dutch organisations fail to document their spatial data with appropriate metadata?

Conclusions

Recommendations

Issues relating to metadata production do occur in Dutch organisations.

Humanware Technoware

Dataware

The production of appropriate metadata for spatial data is a difficult, complicated process which requires a great deal of planning and expertise.

Organisations should be as clear as possible with regards to the choices made .

Orgware

Organisations should be aware of their production processes.

Organisations should be aware of the quality of their metadata.

Organisations should be aware of the needs of their personnel.

These issues impact the quality of the metadata being produced.
