Cross Section

Sunnyside AreaThe proposed Wilson-Sunnyside Avenues landscape improvements continue south to Sunnyside, essentially with little change. However, between Sunnyside and Montrose Avenues, as in other sections of the Ravenswood Greenway, the bulk of current landscape plantings are on railroad property and will be removed during the project construction. An additional fifteen feet of new green space is proposed to be created by narrowing the width of Ravenswood Avenue, changing the street to one-way southbound and converting the existing head-in parking to angle parking. This will provide sufficient width to avoid installation of a high retaining wall and al-low for use of a lower, plantable landscape wall. While all current landscaping will be removed, the new parkway will allow for an equal amount of greenery plus opportunities for sustainable drainage improvements.

If this portion of Ravenswood Avenue is not narrowed to allow for a substantial landscaped parkway area, the green space remaining after project completion will be about five feet wide, backed by a continuous “high wall.” This will be a more pronounced change for the landscaping in this area, which is currently well-maintained by area businesses.
