Understanding Context of Use

What are Smartphones used for?

Where are they used?

THINK OF THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE,

THEN DESIGN

Interaction Design Principles• Learnability• Efficiency• Memorability• Error recovery• Simplicity• Mapping• Visibility• Feedback• Consistency• Satisfaction

How easy is it to learn?

• An interface should be easy for the user to use from the first time the user interacts with it.

• Amount of functionality should limited to what the user needs for their goals

Efficiency

• Number of steps it takes a user to complete his/her tasks

• Key tasks should be made as efficient as possible

Memory

• The interface should become easier each time the user interacts with it

• Frequency of use is a key factor

Error Recovery

• In a PERFECT user interface, the user should never be allowed to make a mistake

• Adequate steps to be taken to ensure he can back track.

Simplicity• Visual Design and Layout should be uncluttered

Mapping

• What the user expects should happen in an interface is exactly what should happen

Visibility

• Understand the user’s goals

Important Information should be more visible

Feedback

• The user should ALWAYS be in control of the interface and not the other way.

Consistency

• Like-items should always be the same throughout the app

• Maintaining UI standards

Satisfaction

• How much the user enjoys or dislikes using the app
