Training of Adult Learners in the use of Konrad Hinsen’s

Molecular model basic toolkit

in Sketchup 8

for

Augmented Reality Media

A simple toolkit that requires a little patience. Can help understand angles in molecules. Is fun to use. With practice learners will find use of the protractor easy.

The molecular model basic toolkit is developed by Konrad Hinsen who has used it to build nucleic acids and the DNA helix.

It is useful to change the the position of the component. Use the hand or rotate symbol to drag.

Go to view & click face styles then click x ray

This shows joints of bonds and atoms

Touch the atom or bond and left click the mouse.

A blue rectangle forms around the component this has to be exploded into individual components. Use the explode icon.

For more information Google browse “Sketchup 8 knowledge Center” about key words and icons

Using edit icon touch exploded

components with arrow then go to edit to copy and paste and never change the axes of components

duplicated.

To make copiesof atoms and bonds the

component needs to be a blue component.

Data of angles of bonds below http://www.chem.wisc.edu/deptfiles/genchem/sstutorial/Text7/Tx73/tx73.html

Use the atoms and bonds to make hydrogen, oxygen, water and

methane and other molecules.

Attempt to make a molecule ethanol and glucose.

Try to construct

a molecule of ethanol

Ethanol is tetrahedral around the central oxygen atom. If the molecule were perfectly symmetrical, the bond C-O-H bond angle would be 109.5 degrees. However, due to the 2 lone pairs of electrons on the oxygen atom, the chemical bonds are pushed closer together by about 2 degrees per lone pair on the oxygen atom (to minimize lone pair-lone pair repulsions, see Wikipedia article of VSEPR for a clearer explanation). So the bond angles of ethanol is approximately 104 degrees.

Hydrogen atoms not well linked to bonds

To build

H2O

Angle of bond in H2O

is 109.5 (104.45)degrees

It requires extreme patience to fit the end points together.

New component made

Copy component in blue rectangle

Paste duplicate component

Use protractor to rotate the hydrogen 104.45 degrees

Use the protractor to make your angle

The angle between two hydrogens is

109.5 in water but this is wrong and should be 104.45

The angle between

two hydrogens is typed in this corner.
