11SPEAKERS

GENE DUVERNOY President, Forterra

Forterra is a nonprofit that secures the keystone places we need for a sustainable and equitable Pacific Northwest. With deep expertise in real estate and relationship-building, Forterra has so far completed 400 land transactions in 90 communities around Washington; securing remote wildlands, working farms, city parks and open space. Under Gene’s leadership, the organization is also pursuing land for affordable and vibrant urban neighborhoods; recognizing that population pressures are likely to grow, whether because of our strong economy, climate change or both.

Forterra’s fundamental conviction is that people and land truly thrive only when they thrive together. The organization also engages people in restoration and stewardship projects in their neighborhood parks through an initiative called Green Cities. And it champions ideas like sustainably sourced Cross-Laminated Timber to create livelihoods — and incentives to care for forests — around struggling rural communities.

A Forterra founder, Gene has guided the organization more than two decades. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the College of the Environment at the University of Washington and the Board of Directors for the Friends of Waterfront Seattle. Prior to Forterra, Gene held positions in government, research, public policy and law.
